The Porsche Vision 357 Speedster Is An Electric Throwback For The Purists
The elegant prototype pays homage to the marque’s first sports car.
Reconciling the past with the future, Porsche has created a forward-thinking concept that pays homage to the marque’s history. Unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Porsche Vision 357 Speedster chops the top off the original Vision 357 concept that debuted in January.
However, the roof (or lack thereof) isn’t the only differentiating factor: the newcomer is an EV. While the hard-top prototype was based off the internal combustion 718 Cayman GT4 RS, the open-top utilises the technology from the battery-powered 718 GT4 e-Performance.
A nod to the German marque’s first sports car, the Porsche 365, the Vision 357 Speedster contemporises the original. appearing in two-tone form, the monolithic body retains the squat, shortened windscreen typical of a speedster, as well as the passenger-side tonneau cover that was once common fare on open-top sports cars.

However, it adds modern day affectations, adding necessary front and rear diffusers, protruding side skirts, and 20-inch magnesium wheels. Atop the Marble Grey and Grivelo Grey Metallic is a welcome dose of 75th-anniversary livery in the form of retro graphics in Miami Blue.

The tonneau cover necessitates a reductionist approach to the cockpit. Pared down to the essentials, it’s comprised of a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic seat shell integrated into the monocoque, with a carbon-fibre roll-over element for support. Hinting at the possible future of racing, the instrument cluster is a completely transparent display set atop the steering column.

While the technical details of the Porsche Vision 357 Speedster haven’t been specified, it borrows chassis of the 718 GT4 Clubsport as well as the powertrain and batteries of the Mission R race car concept; a setup which could produce up to 800 kW.
The Porsche Vision 357 Speedster embodies the essence of the brand,” says Michael Mauer, Chief Designer at Porsche. “Driving pleasure and driving dynamics combined with an extremely purist form. As with the Mission X that we presented just a few weeks ago, this model demonstrates that even with fresh design genes, the Porsche DNA shines through.”
