Best SUV Coupe: Audi RS Q8 Performance
A record-setting performer that balances serious pace with everyday composure.
On the hierarchy of bona fide motoring industry flexes, there’s one gloat that trumps sales figures, award tallies and influencer endorsements: how quickly your prized machine can negotiate a hallowed loop of concrete in the German town of Nürburg.
It was in November 2024 that the Audi RS Q8 Performance, in the hands of racing driver Frank Stippler, swaggered onto the fabled ’Ring circuit and proceeded to obliterate the SUV lap record held by the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT by two whole seconds, registering 7:36.698 on the official stopwatch.
The feat was hardly a curveball among car cognoscenti, for whom the Q8 has always been an under-the-radar lionheart since its 2018 inception, synthesising blood-pumping dynamics with everyday utility. Only now, this iteration wears the inimitable RS performance badge, and uses the same 471 kW, twin-turbo V8 (and chassis) found in the Lamborghini Urus—making it the most powerful series-production combustion model in Audi’s history. That doesn’t mean drivers must subject themselves to the auto equivalent of a skeleton bobsled; Comfort driving mode transforms the Q8 from a track-bred rascal into a supple, polite gentleman.
Still, befitting a vehicle with cojones, the Audi does visually announce itself on the tarmac, flaunting a bold grille pattern, HD Matrix LED headlights with selectable signatures and 23-inch wheels—without emitting too much gaudy, Premier League footballer energy.
And if, this year, you’ve already put down a deposit for a Bombardier, refurbished the Oceanco, and shelled out for another term of school fees, it’s worth noting that the RS Q8 is more competitive than its not-too-distant Lambo kin. Catch it, before electrification does.
