voco Gosford and Astra Rooftop Bar Are Elevating the Central Coast Experience
Gosford’s new rooftop dining destination and internationally branded hotel mark a turning point for the region’s hospitality scene.
Some hotel bars exist to serve the hotel. Others become the reason to visit.
Astra rooftop bar belongs firmly in the latter camp. Occupying the uppermost level of voco Gosford and overlooking the Brisbane Water estuary on New South Wales’ Central Coast, the venue introduces a new social vantage point for the region.
From its perch above the water, Astra commands sweeping views across Gosford and the surrounding coastline.
The venue also speaks to a broader change underway. As the Central Coast continues its evolution from commuter corridor to lifestyle destination, voco Gosford has emerged as one of the region’s most ambitious hospitality projects. The internationally branded hotel brings contemporary accommodation, event spaces and a level of hospitality that reflects the area’s growing maturity.
For decades, the Central Coast’s attraction lay largely in what surrounded it: beaches, national parks and a slower pace than Sydney. Increasingly, however, visitors are finding reasons to stay put. A new generation of restaurants, hotels and lifestyle experiences is reshaping perceptions of the region, and voco Gosford sits squarely at the centre of that shift.
The hotel’s location places guests within easy reach of the coast’s natural attractions, but its greatest strength may be that it encourages visitors to spend more time in Gosford. Once overlooked as a stop along the Pacific Highway, the city is beginning to emerge as a destination in its own right.
Astra is perhaps the clearest expression of that ambition.
The menu leans into contemporary Japanese flavours, from sashimi and hand-rolled sushi to dishes emerging from the hibachi grill. At the same time, a polished cocktail programme ensures the drinks are every bit as considered as the food.
The result is a venue equally suited to a long lunch, sunset cocktails or dinner as day gives way to evening across the coast.
Its credentials were evident during Robb Report’s most recent Car of the Year programme, when Astra provided a memorable lunch stop on the return drive to Sydney. After two days spent assessing some of the world’s most desirable performance cars, it proved an appropriately polished setting to pause, compare notes and reflect on the road ahead.
More importantly, neither voco Gosford nor Astra feels as though it is trying to imitate Sydney. The proposition is something more assured, creating an experience that belongs to the Central Coast.
For a region long defined by what lay beyond it, that may be the most significant development of all.
