The Fife Arms in Scotland Just Unveiled a ‘Secret’ Coco Chanel–Inspired Room
The new accommodation is an homage to the designer’s love for the Scottish Highlands.
Coco Chanel, of course, is known for her adoration of all things couture. But she also had a deep reverence for the Scottish Highlands; some of her creations were even inspired by the breathtaking landscapes of that rugged expanse and the fabrics seen throughout the region.
And now the Fife Arms, the luxe hotel nestled in the village of Braemar, is paying homage to that love affair with a new guest room inspired by Chanel herself. The five-star locale added an even more playful twist on the space, too, by making it a “secret” that guests can uncover using some nods to Coco as clues.
Chanel’s connection to Scotland began in the 1920s, when she first arrived in the nation during her relationship with Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster. As she visited the country over the next 10 years, the fashion designer became enamored with the culture of the Highlands—and even turned into an avid fly-fisher because of her time there.

The new Fife Arms guestroom, priced from $1,900 AUD, takes inspiration from Chanel’s life in Scotland and beyond. The hotel turned to its interior designer, Russell Sage Studio, to transform its former Family Room into the Chanel-inspired accommodation. The fashion icon was known to hate doors, often blocking them with decorative screens with the hope of making her guests forget to leave; the Fife Arms leaned into that tidbit by tucking the “secret” room behind a trompe-l’œil door adorned with details from Chanel’s Paris apartment. (The path to the accommodation can be found by trailing a Camellia symbol, too).
Once inside, you’ll be greeted by warm, rich hues of yellow and blue, alongside specially commissioned tweeds done up in green and burgundy from Linton Mill. Chanel stumbled upon the textile business in 1928, and her eponymous fashion house still sources fabric from it today. The room’s headboard and furniture have been painted in Scottish Chinoiserie, while the pink floral wallpaper mirrors the one that Chanel used to decorate Rosehall House, the Scottish manor where she resided during her time spent with the Duke.

The designer’s Paris apartment at 31 Rue Cambon inspired details inside the room, too, such as the wheat-sheaf chandelier and Art Deco mirror placed on the dressing table. Elsewhere in the accommodation, you’ll find a walk-in wardrobe, a freestanding copper bath tucked in an arched alcove, and a dedicated bar area. With all those thoughtful touches, we bet Chanel would have given the accommodation her stamp of approval.
