Audemars Piguet And Matthew Williams Have Created The Sleekest Royal Oak Yet

Two years ago, 1017 ALYX 9SM—the streetwear brand founded by Givenchy creative director Matthew Williams—teamed up with watch customisation company MAD Paris to create a minimalist, brushed metal take on the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.
Cut to now and 1017 ALYX 9SM has once again put its singular spin on the iconic—sorry, but it’s warranted here—model, with Audemars Piguet officially collaborating with Matthew Williams on a four-piece collection and a one-off two-tone timepiece. Comprising two Royal Oak and two Royal Oak Offshore references ranging from 37mm to 42mm across yellow and white gold, there’s something for every wrist — and, every taste.
Both Royal Oak models take shape in yellow gold. Powered by the calibre 5909, the 37mm selfwinding three-hand model is ideally suited to smaller wrists. Its minimalist layout showcases the purity of the brushed gold dial which remains bare save for the ‘Audemars Piguet’ and ‘1017 ALYX 9S’ signatures, the former in gold appliqué and the latter transferred. The 41mm selfwinding chronograph takes a similarly reductionist approach, eschewing the chronograph counters and leaving only the hands at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock. Under the dial, it’s kept beating by the integrated chronograph calibre 4409.
Similarly, the duo of Royal Oak Offshores strip the model back to its component parts, dispensing with the typical information found on the dial. The date aperture at 3 o’clock remains, as does the AP monogram next to it, while the 1017 ALYX 9S sits at 6 o’clock. The chronograph counters have been removed, leaving just the hands. Both powered by the calibre 4404, the 42mm chronographs are available in yellow or white gold, and are accompanied by an additional black rubber strap.
Each of the quartet of Audemars Piguet x 1017 ALYX 9SM releases is fitted with a sapphire crystal caseback that reveals the white or yellow gold oscillating weight within, which features an engraving of the 1017 ALYX 9SM signature as well as the indication of Newton’s millimetre and rotor weight; the latter a nod to the technical references indicated by Matthew Williams on his buckles.
An additional one-off 41mm Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph sees yellow gold meet stainless steel, with a contrasting black PVD-coated gold dial adorned with a satin finish. The unique timepiece will be auctioned off during the collaboration’s launch party in Tokyo, with funds going to the not-for-profits Kids in Motion and Right to Play, which support play-based learning initiatives for disadvantaged children.
Each of the Audemars Piguet x 1017 ALYX 9SM Royal Oaks are limited to 200 pieces while the Royal Oak Offshores are limited to 75 examples.
