Guerlain opens a new outpost the Athenian Riviera, at the One&Only Aesthesis day spa.

In the ’60s and ’70s, Greek tycoons and the beau monde (Jackie Onassis, Brigitte Bardot, Frank Sinatra) flocked to the sands of Glyfada, 30 minutes’ drive south of central Athens, for its dazzling scenery, thronging beach clubs and decadent after-hours haunts.
Now, after a hiatus from the spotlight, the Champagne corks are popping once again along this 60 km stretch of coastline, with a string of new developments and initiatives on the Athenian Riviera promising to usher in a new golden era.
Ellinikon, a regeneration project being built on the site of the decommissioned local airport, is transforming this section of Athens into a green, smart city, and bringing new apartment buildings, parks and yacht marinas to what was a long-overlooked seaboard. And on the gastronomic scene, AbraOvato, an upscale restaurant and beach club that recently re-opened on nearby Lake Vouliagmeni, is drawing crowds with an Asian and Latin-American take on traditional Greek cuisine.
At the One&Only Aesthesis—a 21-hectare, pine-forest-fringed resort whose architecture pays homage to mid-century European design—Guerlain has been invited to create the hotel’s day spa, the brand’s first in Greece.
A tableau of wispy lavender bushes and gnarly olive trees greet visitors as they reach the 10-room facility (including two for couples, each with their own courtyard and pool). Inside, pale timber joinery, local rough-cut stone and marble create a homely nest for the herbal scents of bergamot, verbena and neroli which infuse the air. The sense of simple, soft luxury, courtesy of London interior design outfit Muza Lab, brings instant, mind-blanking serenity. Pale-apricot terracotta, deep creams and the island’s signature pearly whites harmonise with vibrant cushions, ceramic lamps, woven screens and objet d’art that all subtly riff off the main building’s geometric shape.
Pre-pampering starts in the Swiss shower, sauna and steam room, accompanied by a cocooning marshmallow-white robe embroidered with a golden honeybee. It’s a subtle reminder that since 2019, Guerlain has been helping to repopulate the global bee population, contributing 125 million of the insects through a partnership with UNESCO. Guerlain also source pure honey for their skincare products from Ouessant, a protected island off France.
Service here is next-level, and treatments run the gamut from waxing and beauty, to make-up tutorials and spa rituals using local flowers and herbs. Highlights include the dedicated couples room, offering services such as Nymph of the Athenian River, which involves a foot bath with delicate flowers, a scalp and massage with rose quartz stones; or the Legendary Strength session, delivering a 90-minute massage with hot glass spheres of aromatic oil. Personalised treatments, such anti-ageing facials, draw on Guerlain’s fabled Abeille Royale and Orchidée Impériale cosmetics, and there’s even an apothecary-style make-up parlour.
The journey continues post-treatment with the opportunity to take lemongrass tea in the lounge before a light lunch and a glass of Champagne at the poolside restaurant Ora, where chef Ettore Botrini salutes his Greek-Italian heritage.
The whole experience here feels exclusive and discreet; visits are timed so that you don’t cross over with other guests. But while it’s not unusual for five- and six-star facilities to make clients feel special, One&Only Aesthesis excels in carrying forward the luxury perks of a hideaway island resort, combined with close proximity to Athens’ cultural buzz. The Riviera’s new halcyon days start here.
