Make Time for Monaco
Ten exceptional stays and experiences make a persuasive case for giving the principality more room on your European itinerary.
Monaco often gets the afternoon treatment: a look at the Casino, lunch overlooking the harbour, then back along the Riviera. It is an oddly cursory approach to a place so accomplished at making people comfortable. The principality may be compact, but its pleasures deserve rather more than a gap between destinations.
There has rarely been a better time to settle in. The new Mareterra waterfront district has added another dimension to the seafront, while refreshed hotels, ambitious dining and the Spa Métropole by Guerlain give returning visitors fresh reasons to unpack. The familiar glamour remains; the ways to enjoy it keep multiplying.
For travellers with the means to make the most of it, the appeal lies in the concentration: a remarkable cellar, a serious art collection, a private beach and a table worth planning an evening around, all within easy reach. Summer has its obvious attractions, but a stay in the shoulder seasons allows a more leisurely acquaintance. These ten experiences make a strong case for keeping the room key. visitmonaco.com
- Let the Métropole write the itinerary

The Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo’s Just For You collection puts its concierge team’s imagination at your disposal. The Bond-inspired From Metropole with Love experience combines a private Casino visit, a helicopter outing and lunch at Japanese restaurant Yoshi, followed by dinner at Les Ambassadeurs by Christophe Cussac. A dedicated attendant keeps the day moving, with gaming chips and a Martini adding the appropriate cinematic flourishes. It is a pleasing solution for anyone who enjoys a full itinerary but would prefer someone else to manage the choreography. metropole.com
- Borrow Lagerfeld’s Riviera address

Villa La Vigie offers a particularly persuasive version of life on the Côte d’Azur. Karl Lagerfeld’s former retreat occupies a wooded setting above Monte-Carlo Beach. The villa has six bedrooms, generous entertaining rooms and sweeping Mediterranean views, making it an appealing proposition for a gathering of friends or several generations of family. Its architectural pedigree lends the stay character; the privacy gives everyone room to enjoy it. Monte-Carlo is close enough for dinner, though an evening at home might prove the harder reservation to surrender. Villa La Vigie
- Secure a room with a racing view

The Fairmont Monte-Carlo’s Grand Prix Suites place one of motorsport’s most recognisable corners within sight of your own terrace. Each has three private terraces, with views taking in the famous Fairmont Hairpin and the marina, plus a separate living room for entertaining or retreating from the action. Race weekend supplies the full spectacle, but the appeal extends beyond the Formula 1 calendar: renovated interiors, sea views and a central address make a comfortable base for a longer stay. For devotees, the circuit becomes part of the scenery even when the engines are silent. Fairmont Monte Carlo
- Give the beach presidential treatment

Le Méridien Beach Plaza has a distinction that matters more with every extra night: it is Monaco’s only hotel with direct access to a private beach. Book the Presidential Suite and give a seaside holiday the space it deserves, with the principality’s restaurants and boutiques still close at hand. Indoor and outdoor pools broaden the options, while the Mediterranean provides the most compelling reason to leave the room. The pleasure here is the ease of moving between town and shore. A morning swim and a dressed-up evening can belong to the same day without either feeling like an expedition. marriott.com
- Leave room for both

Monaco’s latest culinary attractions warrant more than one reservation. Robuchon Monaco has earned its first Michelin star under chef Jonathan Larrieu, who interprets Joël Robuchon’s French culinary legacy in interiors by Francis Sultana. Give dinner the evening it deserves, then make a separate appointment with Cédric Grolet Monte-Carlo at the Hôtel de Paris. The pastry chef’s boutique and tearoom brings his signature trompe-l’œil fruits and sculpted flowers to the hotel’s patio, with breakfast, brunch and afternoon tea providing ample opportunity to indulge. Savoury dishes feature, too, though the artistry in the pastry cabinet makes a persuasive case for rearranging your priorities. Robuchon Monaco, Cédric Grolet Monte-Carlo
- Go underground at the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo

Some of Monte-Carlo’s most coveted treasures are stored beneath street level. The historic wine cellars of the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo hold more than 350,000 bottles and are described by their owner as the world’s largest hotel wine cellars. Their scale is impressive; the real fascination is the depth of the collection and the knowledge required to maintain it. Enquire in advance about arranging a private visit and tasting rather than treating this as a walk-in attraction. A sommelier-led encounter gives the great labels context, and a familiar hotel an entirely different dimension. Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo Wine Cellars
- See three countries from the sky

Monaco’s position between France and Italy lends itself to a particularly good helicopter outing. Arrange a private sightseeing itinerary with Héli Air Monaco or BLADE, requesting a route that takes in all three countries in a day. The Mediterranean coastline, hillside villages and Alpine backdrop make the geography as compelling as the convenience. The flight also offers a perspective impossible to get from a harbour terrace: the principality’s densely packed waterfront set against a much larger sweep of coast and mountains. Agree the route and any landing arrangements when booking, then leave time to enjoy Monaco again at ground level. heliairmonaco.com, Blade
- Keep an appointment with Guerlain

The Spa Métropole by Guerlain makes a splendid addition to the Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo’s attractions. Pale interiors, golden wood and tissue-paper sculptures by French artist Claudine Drai establish the mood; treatments tailored to individual needs give the appointment its purpose. Ten treatment rooms include the Rose Chérie suite for one and the Impérial suite for two, while a hammam, sauna, cold plunge and ice fountain invite a longer visit. Bastien Gonzalez’s Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio adds another reason to book. Allow an afternoon for it, with enough breathing room afterwards to avoid immediately undoing the sense of repose. metropole.com
- See Monaco in a different light

The Nouveau Musée National de Monaco brings the principality’s heritage into conversation with modern and contemporary art. Its two historic homes, Villa Paloma and Villa Sauber, make architecture part of the attraction, with changing exhibitions offering fresh perspectives on a destination so often viewed through its famous social calendar. Villa Paloma currently takes centre stage while Villa Sauber undergoes renovation and expansion. Allow time to explore the exhibition and appreciate the setting: this is another side of Monaco that deserves more than a passing glance. Nouveau Musée National de Monaco
- Put the principality in perspective

A private historian-led tour brings depth to streets that can otherwise pass in a photogenic blur. Ask for an itinerary that connects Monaco’s old town and Grimaldi heritage with the development of Monte-Carlo, allowing time for lesser-known corners along the way. The value is in the explanation: how this small Mediterranean territory acquired its identity, and how successive generations have shaped it. Tailor the walk to your interests, whether architecture, royal history or the evolution of the seafront. It is a fitting way to finish a longer stay, with a clearer sense of the place behind the famous addresses.
The best of Monaco deserves a little more of your time. Plan a longer stay at visitmonaco.com.
