Large catamarans have traditionally been considered a little boxy and slow, but the segment is quickly evolving towards greater elegance, speed and heightened design. A vessel that makes no compromise, Excess 14 offers the sailing speeds of a yacht, in tandem with a hotel-on-water lifestyle.
In 2024, French sailing yacht group Benetau celebrates 140 years in the nautical industry, with an ambitious program of new releases to mark the occasion. Excess, one of the brands in the Beneteau stable, is one of the best catamaran makers around today.
For die-hard ocean racers their new release, the new Excess 14, is a cat that sails like a yacht, but below deck it delivers a spacious, modular layout.
The Excess 14 easily reaches cruising speeds of 11-15 knots, yet arrives with a list of refined features inside each of its hulls. Think walk-in-wardrobes and ensuites in the sleeping quarters, as well as a removable chart table for entertaining next to the galley. Thanks to its performance-oriented design, Excess can still rack up transatlantic crossings but is also perfect for anchoring in peaceful waters to indulge in boating, scuba diving or snorkelling.
Stylish yet practical, the newest model Excess has the added benefit of a low heel factor—always a plus for pouring a glass of champagne or serving bumps of caviar—not to mention, sleeping in.
The interior has customisable space with room for 4 double cabins with 4 showers below deck, and three areas for guests to sprawl out and enjoy the scenery above. A collaboration with French naval architects Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost of VPLP design means the Excess 14 benefits from their deep understanding of ocean racing.
Inspired by a traditional yacht set-up, the two helm stations at the stern put the owner in direct contact with the rudders and present a clear view of the sails. The 14 is also designed with a forward-set rig, a square-top mainsail and a large overlapping genoa to optimise the sail area to displacement ratio.
Inside, the modular interior has retained an excellent sense of volume and headroom and feels like a modern luxury apartment. Purely because of all the space the Excess offers, it encourages owners to venture out on longer sea journeys that are comfortable and fun.
The Excess 14 (ranging from around $1-$1.4m) will gently blow captain and crew away to some of the world’s most treasured destinations. Ideal for exploring untouched beauty and an enviable list of destinations not accessible by land.
