Given that Alkira is an indigenous word meaning bright and sunny, it’s only fitting the futuristic Alkira Resort House in Cape Tribulation was designed to capture the best of what Queensland weather has to offer.
Part Hollywood-inspired spaceship, part glamorous James Bond getaway, the home was created by visionary architect Charles Wright who in 2014 earned both the AIA Robin Dods Award for Residential Architecture and the AIA FNQ House of the Year for his efforts.
Alkira Resort House—also known as Stamp House thanks to its original owner, Rob Perry, being a professional stamp dealer and property developer—has hosted a slew of celebrities and was even used as a set for the Godzilla vs Kong sequel.
Currently used as a high end holiday home, Alkira commands more than $3000 a night with the capacity to accommodate up to 12 guests. Sitting on approximately 30ha, the estate has more than 1000sq m of living space.
A carbon neutral off-the-grid property, the uniquely cantilevered house overhangs an engineered water eco system and has been built using innovative tropical architectural design principles employing for a cyclone-proof future.
All energy at the concrete house is renewable, provided by large photovoltaic battery storage, off-setting any air-conditioning and lighting. The whole roof space has been curated to house a 250,000 litre in-ground water tank, there is an on-site sewerage treatment plant and insulated thermal mass engineering. All the ingredients are there to deal with the harsh, corrosive wet tropical environment.
“Critical to our approach was in developing new ways of living in tropical latitude, by providing secure yet flexible open areas for all functions including living, entertaining, dining, recreation and swimming, which are completely naturally ventilated and further enhanced with integrated building systems,” Wright has written about the home.
Living areas surround a central pool and landscaped courtyard with a feature waterfall. The six timber-lined bedrooms each form their own cantilevered wings over the man-made lake which is home to turtles, fish and water lilies. All have individual balconies and marble ensuites while the main suite features a private outdoor spa.
Within Alkira’s commercial kitchen there is a walk-in refrigerator and freezer, high quality appliances and island bench seating, and for entertaining there is the choice of four lounge areas, two dining spaces, an executive office, 2400-bottle wine cellar, a gym, plus a boardwalk to a 600m private beach.
Mango House, a seperate three-bedroom two-bathroom manager’s residence is also included on title and can be accessed by a separate driveway to the main residence.
On the market fully furnished, Alkira is 30 minutes from Cairns Airport by helicopter or two and a half hours by car. It is set for auction on the 12th of October.
