The Art of Listening
French audio house Devialet brings sculptural form and an unusually physical sense of music into the home.
A room can be beautifully furnished and still feel unfinished. Music changes that. The right speaker adds presence without forcing the owner to choose between sound quality and how they want to live. That is the appeal of Devialet, the Parisian audio house whose Phantom speaker has become as recognisable for its sculptural form as for the startling power of its sound.

Founded in 2007, Devialet has built its reputation on acoustic engineering, with more than 250 patents behind a range that includes amplifiers, earbuds, a soundbar and portable speakers. Phantom remains its most distinctive calling card. Introduced in 2015, it made high-fidelity audio something to live with and look at, rather than equipment to conceal.
Phantom Ultimate, introduced a decade later, develops that idea. Its elongated silhouette has been refined, while its engineering draws greater detail and depth from a recording. A voice has texture; a bass line has weight. A song you know by heart can still move you.

Devialet calls this “Alive with Sound”. Its proprietary amplification and speaker technologies help give music both physical force and fine detail. CEO Jacques Demont describes the aim as sound with greater “intensity, clarity, and depth”. The pleasure is in moving between those qualities: feeling a rhythm fill the room, then hearing a small inflection in a singer’s voice that makes the performance feel close.
Phantom Ultimate has a visual presence to match. Deep Forest is dark with subtle green reflections, while Light Pearl takes its cue from bisque ceramics. The Opéra de Paris edition has 22-carat gold leaf applied to its side panels by artisans at Ateliers Gohard. Each finish makes a different proposition for the interior, from quiet integration to a high-impact centrepiece with a distinctly French flourish.

The speaker can stand alone, work as a stereo pair or bring music into several rooms. It can set the mood for a dinner or make a favourite recording worth sitting down for, with no other plans for the evening.
Advance Audio brings Devialet to Australian listeners through its authorised retailer network. “Exceptional performance, technology and design all carry equal importance,” says Darren Lawrence, Devialet Product Manager at Advance Audio Australia. He sees growing demand among Australian customers for speakers that sound extraordinary and belong in the home visually. Phantom Ultimate is best heard in person: you can see the finishes in photographs, but it’s harder to convey what it does to a familiar piece of music.
