A tattoo is the ultimate embodiment of permanent expression — here, it meets hyper horology in the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Dr. Woo Monobalancier. Marking the second time the Swiss manufacture and the American tattoo artist have fused their singular style to create a horological icon, the recently updated Excalibur Monobalancier serves as the canvas for the latest collaboration.
Known for his intricate monochromatic single-needle style, Dr. Woo’s creations are a marked deviation from the heavy lines and vibrant shades of traditional tattooing. Looking to the heavens for inspiration, the newcomer takes on a celestial tone. Dr. Woo’s artwork is laser-engraved onto the dial, with the ultra-fine curvilinear rose gold lines juxtaposed against the clean-cut forms of the 42mm black ceramic case.
Between 10 and 11 o’clock, a laser-engraved sun surrounds the micro-rotor of the skeletonised calibre (the automatic in-house RD720SQ), while earth appears over the barrel in grey between 4 and 5 o’clock. A crescent moon at 8 o’clock reveals the inner workings of the balance wheel beneath. Design signatures of both Roger Dubuis and Dr. Woo are incorporated; the former’s astral star is takes pride of place in rose gold on the internal sapphire disc while the latter’s spider sits between 2 and 3 o’clock, subtly engraved in black.
Resembling the arms of some of the tattoo artist’s most loyal clients, the bezel of the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Dr. Woo Monobalancier is adorned with Dr. Woo’s iconography. Geometric symbols are engraved onto the scratch-resistant black ceramic and make their way onto the leather strap.
Priced at $122,000, the collaborative Excalibur Dr. Woo Monobalancier is limited to 28 examples and is available on request through Roger Dubuis.
