A Custom House for Casual Tailoring
Already renowned for its custom suits, John Steel now offers a range of made-to-measure staples engineered to ensure even the most casual outfit fits like a glove.
Whether in business or on vacation, a well-lived life often tends not to be conducive to finding clothes that fit the average man of leisure. Bodies change in all manner of ways as one gets older, and while tailors exist to ensure that one can always look well turned out in the bar and the boardroom, the range of everyday attire available to men of different sizes—be they shorter, taller, larger or slimmer than average—can often be found wanting.
It’s for this very reason, along with the increasing blurring of the lines between casual and formal wear, that a new generation of tailors has emerged—aiming not only to revolutionise the way men build out a wardrobe of timeless, form-fitting suits but also to overhaul their entire wardrobe with the same approach. Chief among them is Sydney tailor John Steel. This made-to-measure label has expanded its range of tailoring beyond suits for business and formal events to include more than 85 wardrobe essentials to cater to just about any occasion.

Founded by Sydney-based friends Lewis and Daniel, ex-colleagues within the custom-made industry, John Steel began life much the same way as other high-end tailoring houses, but with an innovative twist to simplify the fitting process.
The suiting process is conducted traditionally by creating a unique pattern that reflects customers’ body, posture and style intricacies. However, once stored, this unique pattern can now be converted seamlessly into all casual items, in all styles. This provides a simplified customer experience to a tailoring process that is traditionally quite time-intensive for the customer, with multiple fittings expected for each item.
After earning plaudits from scores of gents thrilled at the quality and ease of John Steel’s signature process, the pair slowly and steadily built a range of everyday wardrobe staples designed and built with this same custom philosophy in mind: timeless, classic menswear, crafted with care and optimised with the help of industry-leading tech.
For the customer, the signature John Steel process is refreshingly straighforward. Just a single fitting is required to unlock access not only to the brand’s signature range of suits but also to an increasingly growing range of made-to-measure essentials. These measurements are then stored and used to provide the pattern for a lifetime’s garments. Tweaks and alterations can be made to your measurements over time, ensuring you constantly have access to a wardrobe that suits your needs.
Across the entire range, John Steel’s commitment to sourcing fabric and materials from world-renowned, ethical suppliers remains constant. The best mills from across Italy and the rest of Europe have been employed to create luxurious but practical fabrics for the label’s shirts, polos, and chinos. The emphasis throughout is on classic cuts, timeless silhouettes, and patterns that will endure the natural ebbs and flows of fashion. The brand even brings a made-to-measure approach to more casual staples, with denim jeans, golf shirts, and even Italian-made custom sneakers available.

For many gents, the hardest step in a wardrobe overhaul is figuring out where to start. For that very reason, John Steel offers personalised service from its Sydney showroom, as well as in-home appointments where a dedicated tailor can review one’s existing garments and make suggestions, allowing you to get as quick a start as possible in your sartorial journey.
