The art of great whisky-making comes from drawing on multiple, often very different, traditions to create something singular. It is often a hard balancing act—after all, there are only so many ways the so-called water of life can come in to being, so many types of casks to go around, and so many years in the calendar with which to age it.
Thus, through provenance, whisky gains its worth: the pursuit of the hitherto unknown and perhaps even unattainable. This often-decadeslong quest comprises a journey that only the world’s most accomplished whisky makers will ever embark on, venturing into territory where the constraints of time and distance become increasingly irrelevant.
Glenfiddich’s Grand Series is the ultimate celebration of this voyage: a globetrotting collection of ultra-premium malts that embraces and celebrates an eclectic mix of traditions. It showcases the marriage of diverse aging techniques to create drinking experiences that feel as rarefied as they do opulent.
At the heart of the Grand Series lie three core whiskies that are more evocative than ever of Glenfiddich’s desire to champion both great whisky-making and the array of ways in which it can be made to feel entirely unique. The first, and most accessible, whisky in the collection takes the drinker on a voyage to the Americas where the molasses and tropical spice offered by Carribean Reserva Rum casks add a unique kick to the sweetness of a liquid patiently aged in American and European oak casks.
The Old World, however, has the most pronounced influence on the 2024 Grand Series, showcasing how the grape and the grain, while traditionally not regarded as great fellows, can merge to create magic. Glenfiddich Grand Cru livens up the party first. Aged for six months in rare French cuvée casks, it takes on an almost effervescent edge.
It’s amid the esteemed glamour of Cognac’s châteaux that the Grand Series reaches its natural zenith. Grande Couronne (simply translated as ‘Great Crown’) is the collection’s pinnacle in both age and the maker’s commitment to expressing whisky at its most indulgent. Rather than being subjected a quick secondary age, Grand Couronne lingers for more than two years in hand-picked French cognac barrels—adding to more than two decades spent in a combination of American and European oak.
With so many modern whisky makers seemingly torn between the competing forces of convention and innovation, Glenfiddich’s Grand Series serves as a poignant reminder of what can be created when both are celebrated in equal measure. Perhaps, more importantly, it expresses that when great artists are empowered to play with heritage and push the boundaries of tradition, the extraordinary often follows.
Glenfiddich Gran Reserva ($339.99) is available now at Dan Murphy’s and BWS. Glenfiddich Grand Cru 23-Year-Old, $505, and Glenfiddich Grande Couronne 26 Year Old, $975, are now available at Dan Murphy’s.
