Four-Legged, Five Star
Pets have always been cool. Now brands are upping the style ante for our pampered companions—from exclusive hotels to luxe fashion.
Pets have played the long game. After generations of patiently enduring sad rubber toys and handfuls of stale biscuits, donated by owners under the guise of “treats”, their time in the sun has finally arrived. Who knows if humans became less parsimonious over time, or animals just became more demanding. Either way, at last count, Australians spent a collective $33 billion on furry pals, an average of $4,247 per household. And brands are waking up to the fact that the enlightened 21st-century version of humankind now regard our pets like the kings and queens they have always been.
Maisons like Gucci and Louis Vuitton are now vying for the doggy dollar/cat coin with branded clothing and accessories; players at major hospitality chains and boutique boltholes are ushering in new pet-friendly rules for overnight stays; and this year, Virgin Australia is promising companion animal flights domestically for pets under 15 kg.
So don’t forget your monogrammed treat jars, travel bowls and plush trimmed carriers. After all, you’re travelling with royalty.
