Editor’s Letter
Give them the ol’ razzle-dazzle, writes our incoming Editor-in-Chief.
Joining a magazine as its new editor is much like being a psychic. In the last few weeks, since taking over the helm at Robb Report ANZ, people keep asking me about my vision. Where do I see the magazine five years from now? What is the future of luxury?
Such questions bring to mind the story of a young Jean Cocteau, the visionary poet, director and aesthete, meeting Sergei Diaghilev, the redoubtable arts impresario and founder of the Ballets Russes. An over-eager Cocteau tried in vain to impress the old grump, who turned to him in frustration and declared, “Étonnez-moi!”—bossy French for “astonish me.”
We’re still feeling the results of that exchange more than a century later. Diaghilev set the direction for contemporary dance and insisted his era’s great fashion designers create clothing that stopped constricting the wearer and allow them to move. (He himself travelled with more trunks than a Louis Vuitton ad.) And Cocteau’s astonishing influence is still felt in the realms of art, film and ideas.
In keeping with Diaghilev’s dictum, then, I believe the job of an editor is to keep readers guessing about and excited for what comes next. To that end, Robb Report will continue to showcase the very best in luxury and introduce readers to people, ideas and places to watch and to namedrop.
I’m pretty good at reading the culture, if I say so myself, but in truth, I’m not much of a psychic. Your crystal ball is as good as mine when it comes to divining the world’s future. But I promise you, the readers of this esteemed magazine (hat tip to my talented predecessors), I will always dazzle and surprise you.
