Crafted with a sense of veneration for the site on which it rests, One Circular Quay reconciles past with present to create a contextually responsive design that serves to enhance and uplift the quality of life of its residents.
Located on 1 Alfred Street, Circular Quay, the multi-residential development follows the successful reception of One Sydney Harbour, which worked to set a precedent for luxury living in Sydney.
The result of a collaboration between visionary late Perth architect Kerry Hill and Daniel Goldberg, founder of London-based interior architecture studio State of Craft, One Circular Quay deftly responds to its setting. Nestled between the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, the façade of the Hill-designed tower sees a meeting of crystalline and honeyed sandstone, the latter material acting as a visual tie to Circular Quay’s heritage buildings.
Set over 58 levels, each of the 158 apartments within One Circular Quay is designed to maximise its unrivalled vantage point. Floor-to-ceiling windows serve to capture both light and the panoramic views of the harbour basin. Balancing a desire for uniqueness with consumer expectations for seamless and well-conceived luxury living, Goldberg has crafted three distinct design narratives.
“An important aspect of what we created was providing residents with a sense of shelter and sanctuary by creating an environment that’s serene and calm,” Goldberg tells Robb Report. “You’ve left the city behind and you’re floating above the harbour basin — we really wanted people to feel away from it all and leave all of that stress behind.”

The trio of palettes derive inspiration from the sky, water, and terrain that frame the views. Defined by an ineffable sense of lightness, ‘Aero’ features subtle textures and matte surfaces which work to capture the pale morning light. Meanwhile, ‘Aqua’ takes on a darker, moodier tone, with polished surfaces echoing the way the city is reflected in the water.
Mimicking the distinct landscape, ‘Terra’ is a warmer palette that combines local spotted gum and green tones to evoke the vegetation present of the nearby hills around the cove.
“[The palettes] don’t impose themselves too much on how people want to live,” says Goldberg, noting that he and his State of Craft team were clear that the interiors “should never compete with the view.”
A deft response to the aesthetic and cultural vibrance of the Circular Quay setting, each palette is a masterclass in restraint, with visual interest added through rich materiality—think an abundance of warm timber and natural stone—and multilayered textural forms.
“We wanted to get under the skin of the site and think about what the essence of what the site is; what makes it so special. I think that’s really key to creating something that has a good sense of uniqueness and appropriateness so that it’s got a sense of place built in when you start designing.” For Goldberg, the iconic early- to mid-20th century photographs of Max Dupain and David Moore provided a cultural reference point.
“This is really the front door to the city,” he says. “It’s the arrival point for so many people and it has been for so many years. There’s a sense of adventure in the air that a lot of port cities have — I think that it’s really amazing to have that sort of atmosphere, whether it’s the commuter ferries coming in every morning or an ocean liner arriving from the other side of the world.”
Offering a respite from the bustle of the city, One Circular Quay provides an environment where everything has been taken into consideration and accounted for. Residents will have access to an array of premium facilities, including dedicated concierge services and a private indoor pool, gym, and steam room.
An architectural love letter to the landscape, One Circular Quay is destined to leave an indelible mark on Sydney’s harbour basin.
