Designed to Last
Rather than chasing trends, Sydney designer Charlie Rizk is creating homes built around the people who live in them—and how they’ll live years from now.
For nearly two decades, Sydney-based interior designer Charlie Rizk has quietly built a reputation among homeowners seeking a more seamless approach to residential design. Through Edge Design Consultants, the multidisciplinary studio he founded in 2006, Rizk oversees projects from architectural interiors and bespoke joinery through to furnishing and final styling. It’s an approach familiar to Robb Report readers. Over the years, we’ve featured several of Edge’s projects, drawn to their understated elegance and enduring appeal.
That integrated model has become increasingly attractive as luxury homeowners look beyond statement pieces and toward homes designed to stand the test of time. Rather than juggling architects, interior designers, decorators and stylists, clients are increasingly seeking a single creative partner capable of shaping the entire experience.
For Rizk, that process begins long before mood boards or material samples.

“We don’t start with the design. We start with the people,” he says. “We ask a lot of questions about how they live—not just today, but how they will live in five or 10 years.”
That long view informs every decision, whether planning spaces for a growing family, accommodating ageing parents or creating homes that can adapt as lifestyles change. For Rizk, good design begins with how a home will be lived in, with aesthetics flowing naturally from that foundation.
It’s also reflected in the projects currently occupying the studio. While luxury homes continue to evolve, Rizk sees a noticeable shift in priorities.
“We are seeing a real shift in what luxury means,” Rizk observes. “It’s less about size and more about quality, longevity and how a home supports everyday life.”
Increasingly, clients are placing greater emphasis, he explains, on wellness, flexible living, finely crafted joinery and natural materials that will age gracefully rather than chase fleeting fashions. The goal is not to create homes that impress on completion day, but ones that continue to reward their owners years later.

Managing every stage of a project helps achieve that consistency.
“Because we understand how they want to live from the very beginning, every decision—from planning and joinery through to furniture and styling—is connected,” Rizk says. “Having one team overseeing the entire journey creates a more cohesive home, a smoother process and a much better experience for the client.”
Ask him what mistakes he sees most often, and the answer comes quickly: designing for trends instead of the people who will inhabit the space.
In his view, the decisions people never regret are good planning, quality materials and timeless detailing. “We don’t design homes to impress for today; we design them to be loved and to function for a lifetime.”
