Best Roadster: Mercedes-AMG SL 63 4MATIC+
A halo of magic seems to hover over this long-hooded vehicle.
Mercedes’ SL is among the toniest props in celluloid history; Sophia Loren cruised in a shiny, lipstick-red version in Arabesque (1966); for Richard Gere’s character in American Gigolo (1980), the model formed an essential part of his playboy schtick; and even in various states of intoxication, Sharon Stone’s mercurial Ginger could not dent the SL’s poise in Casino (1995).
It is easy to mentally summon these and other screen darlings when in the company of any SL—likewise the model line’s racing genealogy (300 SL has its origins in the brand’s mythical 1952 race car, the WI94). The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 4MATIC+ is no different; a halo of magic seems to hover over the vehicle.
The mystique magnifies when, with the push of button, the hood is vanquished in 15 seconds (hard- or soft-top versions are available), leaving drivers exposed to the elements. Wind deflectors and the marque’s Airscarf technology—charged with blowing warm air from headrest vents, creating a virtual neck-warmer—alongside a suite of noise-reducing mechanisms, keep the experience sensual, not severe. And all the better to hear the exhaust system conduct its low, throaty orchestra.
Unlike many of its roadster antagonists, the SL 63 puts all its four wheels to work, helping that sleek body to grip tarmac and improving steering sensations—imbuing drivers with confidence in all conditions. They will be glad of it, too; the compact Mercedes has 315 km/h within its grasp, which with the top down, is sure to feel close to light speed.
Of course, the SL’s design language has been updated over the years but, in keeping with the immutable likes of the Porsche 911 or VW Beetle, the athletic, long-hooded design has barely changed since Loren’s day. And that warms our souls.
