Best Off-Roader: Mercedes-Benz G580
An electric off-roader that honours its heritage while delivering formidable capability.
In an era of granular, around-the-clock scrutiny, automotive-icon status can be both a gift and a curse. Fanboys will cheerlead for their favourite models with cultish fervour, collectively defending their cars’ honour in social media scuffles; disturb the status quo with severe redesigns and off-brand modifications, though, and the backwash directed towards the makers will be brutal. See: Land Rover Defender et al.
G-Wagen disciples—whose numbers are many, and vocal—had no cause to reach for the pitchforks as Mercedes-Benz rolled out an electrified iteration of its beloved 45-year-old stalwart that wholly respected the nameplate’s DNA where, frankly, it matters to most buyers: in the looks department.
Unlike certain marques who feel compelled to “future-fy” their electric products with an antiseptic, Jony Ive aesthetic, Stuttgart has preserved the classic boxy figure, almost to a tick. Granted, a handful of minor aero-enhancing tweaks have been applied—those well-remunerated German creatives must earn their keep, after all—but the overarching visual takeaway is one of continuity, the in-house deification of a motoring god.
The real revolution takes place under its ruggedly sexy skin: the G580 roosts on a new bespoke ladder frame chassis made to support the humongous 116 kilowatt-hour battery; meanwhile, each wheel is driven by its own electric motor, a boon if you’re caterpillar-crawling through rocky off-road terrain. Each motor has a built-in two-speed transmission, capturing the G’s trademark low-range tenor.
The silent, assured way the G-Wagen goes about its business both in the wild and on civilised tarmac is a metaphor for this hero’s transition to the electric epoch.
