For Japanese watchmakers Grand Seiko the natural environment is a constant muse. Just look at the manufacture’s award-winning ‘White Birch’ release for proof.
Here, once again Grand Seiko is celebrating its very own style — the set of nine principles that gave Grand Seiko its distinctive look — first seen in the 1967 44GS.
Today the watchmaker has unveiled a new limited edition Spring Drive watch that joined the celebration, aptly named the 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition.
The dial has a deep blue colour that captures the beatify of the full moon above the Shinshu mountains — seen from the studio in Shinshu where all Spring Drive watches are crafted.
True to Grand Seiko’s penchant for beautiful finnisage, the watch sees a sunray pattern on the dial to catch light at every angle and recreate that lunar sparkle. Also here, the glide motion seconds hand is gold in colour, as is the ‘GS’ lettering at 12 o’clock while the minute and seconds hands are shaped (by hand) to curve gently down towards the minute track at the edge of the dial — enhancing legibility.
The dial is encased in stainless steel measuring 40mm and is strapped to the wrist via a coordinating dark blue strap in crocodile leather with a three-fold clasp
The 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition is powered by the manual winding Spring Drive Calibre 9R31 that incorporates the dual-spring barrel, that delivers a power reserve of 72 hours. Further, the thinnest of this movement and slim construction of the case and the box-shaped sapphire crystal combine to achieve a slim and classic design.
The watch is limited to 1500 examples, each with the serial number and ‘limited edition engraved into the caseback.
The timepiece will be available in August and is set to cost $12,100. Grand-seiko.com
