With another new vintage comes a new livery for the Mille Miglia 2022 Race Edition chronograph from Swiss manufacture Chopard. The watchmaker’s emblematic timepiece collection now lands in grey and blue as a heady tribute to the most prestigious of the classic open-road races.
Tomorrow, June 15, the Mille Miglia is celebrating the 40th edition of its re-enactment — and for the 35th consecutive year Chopard is on the starting grid. This year, the race is set to start in Brescia before travelling to Rome before returning to Brescia, in an endurance test across three days.
Chopard’s latest iteration of its Mille Miglia timepiece is a 44mm watch boasting a case of either ethical 18-carat rose gold and stainless steel or an all-steel version. The all-steel version will see a run of 1000 timepieces while the second, rose gold adorned version will be limited to 250 pieces.
As is the history of sporting chronographs, legibility is core to the watch’s function as is typified on the Mille Miglia collection by the size of the baton-type hands, large and rimmed in bright blue, as well as in the finishing of the hour-markers based on the same principle of contrasting blue. Further, the concern for legibility is also reflected in the size of the date at 3 o’clock — enlarged by a magnifier cut into the underside of the sapphire crystal.
Elsewhere, the separation of the functional zones is established by the dial finishes used by Chopard. The chronograph counters found at the 6 and 12 o’clock feature a snailed pattern to stand out from the rest of the dial. These counters are also distinguished by the hands which — like the large central sweep-seconds hands – are red tipped in a nod to the famous race.
As a proclaimed ‘Race Edition’, technical prowess and precision of the timepiece is paramount. The movement of the Mille Miglia 2022 Race Edition watch is therefore chronometer-certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute. Here, the calibre within the timepiece features a 48-hour power reserve.
The watch also features mushroom-type pushers with a large surface area and a knurled pattern — easy to use with gloves on — while the watch is fitted with a gold-toned calfskin strap lined with rubber for a comfortable wear. The 1000 piece limited edition in stainless steel is priced at $12,100 while the 250-piece limited edition in stainless steel and ethical 18-carat rose gold is priced at $17,700.
