The historic past of the Mille Miglia has seen the revitalised endurance event transform into the world’s most elegant race.
This iteration is set to take place from June 16-19, marking the 39th historical re-enactment of the original 1937 race.
It also marks Chopard’s continuing involvement in the event – the Swiss manufacture a main partner and official timekeeper of the sophisticated race since 1988.
This year, Chopard has once again unveiled a watch (or two in fact) to commemorate its commitment – the Mille Miglia 2021 Race Edition chronographs.
Available in a limited-edition of 1000 stainless steel or 250 stainless steel and 18-carat pink gold pieces, the new timepieces both measure in at 44mm (up on the previous 42mm) and reflect Chopard’s enduring link to motorsports.
The sporty additions that are the Mille Miglia 2021 Race Edition timepieces feature a 48-hour power reserve, stop-seconds function (important for rally), 100-metres of water-resistance and glare-proofed sapphire crystal for increased legibility.
The bezel arrives with a black ceramic insert – regardless of the case selected – and borrows its design cues from the gauges of classic cars. Elsewhere the caseback is secured with screws and bears a chequered flag. The 1000 Miglia logo and the inscription ‘Brescia > Roma > Brescia’ once more nods to the watchmaker’s relationship with the race.
Both arrive with grey dial, obtained by galvanic treatment on a brass base, features a circular satin-brushed finish performed by dial-maker artisans. The famous 1000 Miglia ‘Red Arrow’ motif points to the semi-instantaneous date display at 3 o’clock — legible through a date magnifier. Meanwhile, the hands and hour-markers are coated in Super-LumiNova to further ensure legibility.
The stainless steel case uses short lugs which, we are told, fits most wrists. Both timepieces land with a calfskin perforated leather strap, furthering its racing charm, with the stainless steel edition brandishing red stitching.
The 1000-piece Mille Miglia 2021 Race Edition stainless steel is $11,200, while the 250-piece stainless steel and 18-carat rose gold is $16,100.
