Blancpain’s committed deep dive into marine conservation shouldn’t actually land with any real surprise.
This is, after all, a historical manufacture firmly connected to diving via its 1953 development of the first modern diving watch, the Fifty Fathoms.
Where you could argue that some brands swimming in this space pay little more than lip service, Blancpain’s dedication to the amelioration of the world’s oceans is wrapped by a genuine sincerity to better things. Under its Ocean Commitment program, the brand continues to raise awareness through various oceanic initiatives – working closely with divers, scientists, underwater explorers, environmentalists and photographers to ultimately elevate the conversation around ocean preservation and build strong public understanding of the cause.
This is seen by its co-financing of scientific expeditions including National Geographic Society’s Pristine Seas expedition and Laurent Ballesta’s Project Gombessa, so too its contributions to, among other platforms, the World Ocean Summit and UN’s World Oceans Day, the sale of limited Blancpain Ocean Commitment timepieces (which assist various initiatives) alongside the annual release of Edition Fifty Fathoms (a luxury publication dedicated to the underwater world), as well as the presentation of several award-winning documentary films and underwater photography exhibitions.
“We’re creating things to last for generations,” Marc A. Hayek, Blancpain President & CEO, has said. “So how can we think short term [when it comes to the environment]? We have to think about future generations.”
