Restore The Reef
Home to some 3% of the world’s coral reefs, much of the Maldives’ reef habitats are sadly under stress due to factors such as ocean warming, diving and land reclamation.
Thankfully, many resorts offer ‘give-back’ schemes — holidaymakers able to do their part to help restore existing reefs.
At the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa the ‘Adopt a Coral’ project sees the resort team up with Reefscapers, a coral propagation organisation appointed by the Maldivian Government. Guests can work alongside local experts to transplant new coral in the Gulhi Falhu lagoon, where much of the coral has been destroyed due to land reclamation.
The impressive and proactive scheme also provides an alternative business to locals whose sole previous source of employment was fishing.
Into The Blue
The Maldivian seas are bursting with life – from its 2,000 species of fish to the bioluminescent plankton that form a magical, nightly lightshow in the waters.
For divers and snorkelers, this expanse of the Indian Ocean offers a wealth og incredible wildlife to view and engage.
Swim with whale sharks, barracuda and stingrays for most of the year in the South Ari Atoll, while the Baa Atoll is better known for manta rays. Hawksbill turtles, meanwhile, can often be spotted around many of the house reefs.
Offering primetime, oceanic viewing without getting your feet wet is the semi-submarine at Kuramathi Island. After taking your seats, the vessel takes you on a voyage 1.3m underwater — the ultimate way to view the incredible array of sealife up close.
