There’s More To The Maldives
It may be synonymous with private-island luxury resorts and beach-filled bliss – but there’s another, equally alluring, side to the Maldives.

Few destinations say ‘luxury’ quite like the Maldives — a necklace of 1,200 blindingly beautiful coral islets strung across the Indian Ocean.
While a handful of atolls are occupied by local communities, most are dedicated to ultra-exclusive resorts – lavish pleasure palaces replete with glass-floored bungalows stilted over the waves, private butler service, lobster and rock-star champagne on the menu, James Bond-esque speedboats and seaplanes ready to whisk you off to powder-white sandbanks.
With each resort comes the blank-slate opportunity to craft experiences so opulent that they’re pretty much unrivalled anywhere else in the world.
From sleeping, dining and spa-ing under the sea to monitoring manta rays in a mini-submarine, here’s how to take the true pulse of the archipelago in serious style.
Get Deep
You don’t need scuba gear to enjoy a front-row seat to Maldivian marine life when you dine at Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, the first of its kind in the world, set five metres below the ocean’s surface at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island. When every last morsel of caviar has been consumed, retire to the resort’s submerged residence, known as The Muruka, where the menagerie of fish swirling around you provides a hypnotic backdrop as you dose off.
Bliss Out
While you’re in the mood for getting deep, book an ‘Underwater Rendezvous’ treatment at Huvafen Spa. Descend eight metres at Huvafen Fushi resort to be met by a masseuse and a marine outlook, your only neighbours a cacophony of colourful tropical fish and turtles. It’s hard to say what’s more soothing – the two-hour therapy or the outlook.
Meet Gentle Giants
Marine biologists at the Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru are alert around the clock. They sound the ‘Manta on Call’ alarm when they spot the enormous rays, which congregate within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve the resort calls home; they then whisk you off to come snorkel-to-wing with these majestic creatures. Should you wish to keep your hair dry, find a perch within the resort’s DeepFlight Super Falcon 3S three-person submarine, ‘flying’ through massive shoals of fish, above fans of coral and alongside reef sharks and those rays.
Sleep Under The Stars
While most Maldivian resorts offer the chance to sleep under the stars in a hammock, only one gives you a front-row seat to the Milky Way via a bubble tent. The cosmic experience at Finolhu Baa Atoll sees you bed down on the sand, with only a thin sheet of plastic between you and a bedazzlement of stars. As soporific as your bed is, you won’t want to turn off the night sky when this is your outlook.
Help Save The planet
Even in the luxury-on-steroids world that is the Maldives, One&Only Reethi Rah stands out as a money-is-no-object pleasure-dome. But style and sustainability unite here thanks to initiatives like the on-island Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, where guests can join marine biologists to help nurse rescued green and hawksbill turtles back to health – then experience the heart-fluttering moment of releasing them back into the wild.
Take Over A Private Island
There are private islands, and then there’s Cheval Blanc Randheli Private Island, a single four-bedroom villa surrounded by a hectare of palm trees and sand that fade into the opaline lagoon of the Noonu Atoll. While idleness is encouraged, it would be a shame not to make the most of your dedicated team of ambassadors, available to organise night dives, moonlight yoga classes, scenic flights and luxury yacht outings, perhaps to the archipelago’s best surf breaks.
