O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree, how lovely are thy branches — especially when they’ve been adorned with angelic cherubs, glittering lights, and crystal ornaments. This year, a handful of hotels around the world are taking the old Tannenbaum to the next level with creative decorations and innovative design. From Karl Lagerfeld’s edgy upside-down tree at the Claridge’s to Chopard’s gilded fir at the Conservatorium in Amsterdam, these are the most covetable Christmas conifers of the holiday season.
## Claridge’s
London’s iconic Claridge’s is turning traditional Christmas tree design upside down — literally. The Mayfair hotel tapped designer Karl Lagerfeld to create an installation based on his favorite childhood memories, and the result is anything but expected: A 5 metres tall, inverted spruce, topped with a mirrored star that sends off rays of light across the elegant black-and-white lobby. Handmade snowflakes, silver leather feathers, and lametta ornaments hang from the branches while an Icelandic sheepskin tree skirt looks like a velvety blanket of snow. Adding to the festive setting are the carolers who perform in front of the tree every day.
## The Ritz London
The Ritz London doesn’t have just any ordinary Christmas tree — it has one grown especially for the hotel in the Scottish Highlands. This year, the elegant spruce stands seven and a half metres tall and is dressed with silver tea pots, angelic cherubs, and golden reindeer heads. The Christmas spirit extends beyond the lobby to the hotel suites, which feature their own holiday decor, Christmas tree, and 24-hour butler service to provide for every holiday need.
## Le Bristol Paris
Christmas in Paris is enchanting — especially when you check in to Le Bristol Paris. This year, the hotel is going beyond the simple Christmas tree, opting instead for an entire forest of them. Wander through the French Garden, where every step takes you deeper into the illuminated firs, with their pine scents, Nordic colors, and bewitching lights. After an evening getting lost in the sparkling display, head to the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Epicure for a seasonal tasting menu topped with traditional Christmas logs.
## The Connaught
London’s elegant Connaught in swanky Mayfair is a treat every day of the year. But during Christmastime, the hotel is a true feast for the holiday senses. This year, the British artist Tracey Emin has created a vibrant, boundary-pushing Christmas tree with neon pink lights that spell out an original holiday poem and a glowing angel at the top. Follow up a visit to the glittering installation with a toast in the Coburg Bar, where the martini cart will be making the rounds well into the wee hours during the festive season.
## The Hay-Adams
Get your Christmas sparkle with a side of politics at the Hay-Adams, a Washington, D.C., landmark offering the city’s best views of the White House. This year, the downtown hotel’s Christmas tree is a vision of birch branches, white snow, snow-filled glass ornaments, and silver and white squirrels — all topped with a large crown of natural branches. Cozy up next to the twinkling Tannenbaum with a festive peppermint cocktail from Off the Record, the hotel’s uber-sexy bar where you’ll glimpse the city’s movers, shakers, and powerful lawmakers.
## Conservatorium Hotel
Christmastime in Amsterdam is wintery spectacle of magical lights and snow-covered bridges. The city’s best tree can be found at the Conservatorium Hotel, which every year partners with a different luxury brand to create an over-the-top Tannenbaum. This year, the Swiss Luxury brand Chopard is behind the gilded tree covered in gold and silver ornaments and glitter-covered snowflakes. Guests staying in the hotel not only get to see the sparkling tree — they also get a Chopard bauble to take home.
## The Lowell
New York City’s grand Lowell Hotel — a mainstay of luxury on the exclusive Upper East Side — is celebrating the holidays with not one but two decked-out Christmas trees. Both were imagined by in-house designer David Driscoll: The traditional lobby tree is a spectacle of red and green bows with a wild twist of safari suitcases (designed for the hotel by the British luxury brand Globetrotter), while the Club Room tree is a modern marvel of gold and silver sparkles.
