A detailed and lavish exhibition exploring the incredible work and influence of  Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel will open in Melbourne this December.

Presented by the NGV, Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto lands locally following a celebrated debut at the Palais Galliera (City of Paris Fashion Museum). It boasts more than 300 items — including 100 garments — sourced from the Galliera’s holdings, Chanel’s heritage division, and loans from public museums and private collections.

Delving into Chanel’s professional oeuvre, it unfolds across several chronological and thematic sections that ultimately highlight Chanel’s design codes while tracing her remarkable six-decade career.

Beyond her fashion output — including early examples of her use of black to connote modernity — Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto presents Chanel’s innovations in perfume, jewellery and accessory design.

The exhibition will open with a black-tie gala on December 4 — with exhibition tickets now on sale.

Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto runs December 5 — April 25, 2022, at NGV International;
