Porsche is a marque renowned for its balanced approach to supercars when compared to its flashy European counterparts.
Yet here, the Germans have pushed the limits for its latest hardcore racer and created what it says is the “most track-focused and aerodynamically optimised” 911 ever.
It’s quite the claim, but the first 911 GT3 RS based on the 992-generation sees a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine (no hybridisation, breathe it in) that produces 386kW and is classically high revving.
It’s a formidable figure for a car that — true to Porsche’s roots — is incredibly lightweight at 1450kg. The power is then delivered via a seven-speed PDK transmission, which, with its shorter ratios, sends the supercar from 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 296km/h in seventh gear.
A lot of mechanical inspiration has been drawn from the firm’s GT customer race car the current 911 GT3 R. Now, the latest GT3 RS generates twice as much downforce as the 991.2-generational model and three times as much as the existing 911 GT3. In more mathematical terms, at 200km/h that equates to 409kg of downforce and 860kg at 284km/h.
Further bits of bodywork that add downforce include the largest ‘swan neck’ wing fitted to a road-going 911 — measuring in six-foot wide and standing taller than the roof. Elsewhere, new side blades, wing inlets and rear splitter keep the supercar planted.
Fans of Formula 1 may be excited to hear that the new model is also equipped with a drag reduction system (DRS) which flattens the wings to reduce drag — improving straight lines speed and braking.
On the topic of braking, aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes with six pistons each which are larger than the previous models measuring 36mm with a diameter of 32mm.
Those who are track bound in the new 911 GT3 RS can take full advantage of the German marque’s Clubsport package, adding a fire extinguisher, six-point seatbelt and steel rollover bar free of charge.
The new 911 GT3 RS is available for order now and starts at $500,200. Australian deliveries are expected to commence from the second quarter of 2023.
