Few cars have had the enduring impact on automotive styling and design achieved by the Mercedes W113 — the collection of roadster/coupe’s including the 230SL, 250SL and 280SL.
With big shoes to fill — in replacing the lauded 300SL and 190SL — Mercedes-Benz looked to its team, helmed by technical director Fritz Nallinger, chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and head of styling Friedrich Geiger and designers Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, who made a compact, lightweight sports car with a now iconic concave hardtop roof that inspired the ‘Pagoda’ nickname.
All models were equipped with an inline-six cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection, while the hood, boot lid, doorskins and tonneau cover were made of aluminium to shed weight. In total, a 280SL with a hardtop weighs in at 1409kg.
When combined with the short, wide chassis, suspension, and radial tyres, the W113 gave drivers at the time an excellent handling experience.
In 1967 the 280SL expanded on the W113 framework (previously limited to the 230SL and 250SL), with the main changes coming in the power department, here arriving with a 2.8 -litre 6-cylinder with a power output of 125kW, 244Nm of torque and a top speed of 200km/h when new.
This 1968 example presented by Pickering Luxury Garage is a stunning example of the motorcar’s original form. Within the white bodywork comes a blue leather interior along with the original dials, four-speed automatic gearbox and original air-conditioning.
The rare model has travelled 75,000km in its lifetime and is priced at $279,990.
