Much is made of Blancpain’s veritable history when it comes to dive watches — but the esteemed Swiss manufacture is also a proud pioneer of the female form.
Nearly 25 years before the world was gifted that debut Fifty Fathoms, Blancpain presented the Rolls — a 1930 standout and the first self-winding wristwatch for women.
It was then in 1956 that the watchmaker unveiled the Ladybird – equipped with the smallest round movement of the time — and a vision headed by Betty Fiechter, the first female CEO of a watch company.
Today Ladybird has come to stand for Blancpain’s overall female watch collections — as it has since 2016 — and the latest offering is a heady unfurling of colour befitting the moniker.
The new range brings seven colourful case and strap combinations to market. The red gold model is available with a choice of peacock green, midnight blue or satin-white alligator leather strap, while the white gold version can be paired with a lemon yellow, tangerine orange, lilac or satin-white alligator leather strap.
The Ladybird Colours features a white mother-of-pearl dial adorned with rounded applied gold Arabic numerals while a band of diamonds highlights the hour-markers while embracing the hands.
Within the collection, the red or white gold case has been carefully designed for elegant proportions — its 34.9mm diameter ensuring a generous display of the piece’s fine artistry (certainly compared to what’s come before) while offering compatibility to a wide range of wrists.
Of course, Blancpain takes the watch that extra step by setting the bezel, lugs and crown with 59 diamonds totalling over 2 carats.
A true jewellery watch, the Ladybird Colours features high-end gem setting with artisans at Blancpain precisely aligning the diamonds one by one so that its facets reflect the light to brilliant effect.
The demanding level of finish applied to the dial and case of the Ladybird Colours is carried over to its movement — the in-house calibre 1153 — renowned for its slim build and four-day power reserve.
Here, the movement combines a circular-grained mainplate, chamfered, satin-brushed bridges adorned with a Côtes de Genève motif.
Each wristband is fitted with a gold pin buckle or folding clasp set with nine diamonds.
