Is this Australia’s finest automotive collection?

Located in a former Bunnings warehouse, this astonishing array represents more than $70 million worth of automotive heritage.

If there were justice in the world, Australia’s finest automotive collection would occupy a space like the Museum of Contemporary Art at Sydney’s Circular Quay. Visitors would stroll across from the Opera House to be awe-struck by more than 400 cars, spanning everything from a gleaming 1927 Rolls-Royce 20 HP to the current LaFerrari supercar.

Instead, this remarkable, privately-owned collection is located 80 kilometres north of Sydney on the NSW Central Coast and is housed within a former Bunnings warehouse. None of which distracts from either the scope or quality of the Gosford Classic Car Museum, which represents more than $70 million worth of automotive heritage spanning nearly 100 years.

For owner Tony Denny, 54, it’s a labour of love; one with a financial upside. Denny is a ferociously astute car trader and his museum buys and sells around 20 cars each month, taking profits on upswings while also ensuring the collection remains fresh for repeat visitors.

The cars range from achingly desirable exotics – the past four Ferrari supercars, for example – to significant one-offs, like Roscoe McGlashan’s jet-powered, 1026km/h Aussie Invader III. Then there’s the wonderfully weird, like the Soviet-built GAZ Chaika, France’s elegant Facel Vega and not one, but two Goggomobils – coupé and Dart.

From a 1963 Airstream van out front, Jimmy G’s Café serves a 1950s-inspired menu. It’s pure, authentic deliciousness; just like the cars inside.
