Australia’s Most Luxurious Margarita

Don Julio teams up with Sydney icon Icebergs for a coveted cocktail.

If you’ve ever awoken bleary-eyed and worse for wear after getting into the Mexican spirit, know you’re not alone.

Also know there is a world of high-quality options that tap into the artisanal well of tequila production and promise better.

One drop promising to be worlds apart is the crown jewel in Don Julio’s tequila portfolio, Don Julio Real. The rare tequila finally lands in Australia this week, and is the world’s last batch of the already limited bottles.

The pinnacle of highland agave, Don Julio Real is aged for three to five years in American white-oak barrels — more than enough time in the Mexican sun —and is one of the few Extra-Anejo tequilas on the market.

The spirit is rich in its aromas, incredibly smooth and imparts a sophisticated flavour profile that shines a light on the agave plant while offering notes of vanilla, caramel and almond undertones.

Further, the one-of-a-kind tequila is enclosed in a bottle adorned with the agave leaves and an elegant piña stopper.

To highlight this special drop’s arrival, Don Julia Real has collaborated with Bondi’s most iconic establishment, Icebergs, to craft Australia’s ultimate luxury margarita, The Real.

Available now, until the tequila runs dry, The Real represents the flavour profile of a classic margarita while dialling the opulence up a few notches.

Icebergs’ drinks director Matty Opai has used Queensland lime skin macerated in raw agave sugar for four days to create a citrus base and created Icebergs’ own blend of orange bitters to use within the cocktail.

A splash of aged Grand Marnier adds complexity before the Don Julio Real is added to the tumbler and stirred down tableside. The drink is served on ice with a spoon of finger lime caviar and set alight with a flamed orange zest. It is priced at $180 per serve.

Don Julio Real is bottled at an ABV of 40% and is available in Australia until sold out from select venues and independent bottle shops; RRP $550, 750ml.
