Winter offers little excitement. Until now, and confirmation the country’s most awarded distiller, Archie Rose Distilling Co, is set to release a debut Rye Malt Whisky.
A ballot allocation drawn on 29 July will be your first chance to snare a bottle (or five), after which it will be available at the bar at Archie Rose from midday August 1 as well as online, or by purchasing tickets to a series of launch events hosted by founder Will Edwards and master distiller Dave Withers.
The initial release of 2071 bottles will be marked and numbered as a ‘First Batch’.
“Our vision for whisky has always been to speak of our experience as Australians, utilise the incredible raw materials available to us, and strive for genuine innovation in what is typically an extremely traditional industry” says Edwards.
Edwards and Withers began with a German malt before working with growers out of Griffith, NSW, to revive heritage rye and barley strains creating malt crop volume and diversity to sustain their own products and the future of the industry.
The use of Australian materials has paid dividends with ‘work in progress’ cask samples awarded Best Australian Whisky at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) Awards in London 2018, and Best Australian Rye Whiskey at the consumer-voted 2019 Spirits International Prestige (SIP) Awards in California.
“Everything about working with malted rye is a challenge,” adds Withers. “It’s difficult to source, difficult to malt, and due to its lack of husk, formidable viscosity, and unique chemical composition, is also extremely challenging to mash, ferment and distil. We persevere with this hardy malt however, due to the incredible character it brings to the final spirit.”
The selectively sourced malted rye and malted barley is paired with virgin American oak casks, air dried for three years before maturing in Sydney’s coastal air. The end result is a layered and aromatic whisky spouting notes of spiced custard, ginger, stone fruit and baked apple pie with a lingering fresh herbal finish.
