Five stunning home amenities we loved in 2017

From a $39 million rare car and motorcycle collection to a backyard water park and an underground lake, here are five one-of-a-kind home amenities that caught our eye.

2017 was a banner year for luxury real estate. In January, a Bel Air estate became the most expensive estate in the U.S. when it listed for US$250 ($A326) million; in August, it was dethroned by a US$350 ($456) million estate in the same neighbourhood. From New York to Texas, an influx of high-end estates were listed for jaw-dropping sums. It should come as no surprise that these over-the-top abodes boast equally stunning amenities. From a US$30 ($A39) million rare car and motorcycle collection to a backyard water park, here are five one-of-a-kind amenities that caught our eye in 2017.

## Underground lake

Nestled into the snow-capped mountains of St. Moritz, Switzerland’s most expensive property was listed for US$185 ($A241) million — a price that seems extreme until you see everything the home has to offer. From a ski den with a private lift to a state-of-the-art spa with a pink Himalayan salt room, the 3,995-square-metre mansion functions as an ultraluxe ski haven. And while it’s hard to pick just one favorite part of the seven-level mountain home, the underground lake — which is illuminated by Swarovski crystal lights and mirrored Italian artwork on the walls — is certainly one of the most unique aspects.

## Backyard water park

Designed to bring out your inner child, this 3,438-square-metre estate near downtown Dallas boasts a multimillion-dollar backyard water park. The 2.8 million litre swimming pool complex includes multiple slides, an interactive lazy river, a 4-metre dive platform with a zipline, a two-story hot tub, and a custom stone grotto with animatronics — all the items necessary to bring the thrill of a water park to your backyard.

The 10-bedroom residence also includes a bowling alley, gym, two movie theatres, and an indoor basketball court modeled after the ones used by NBA All-Stars. Asking price: US$28 ($A36) million.

## Glass funiculars

Located on the edge of Lake Tahoe, this US$75 ($A97) million cliffside estate in Crystal Bay, Nevada, offers 1,502-square-metre of living space between the main residence, guesthouse, caretaker’s apartment, and beach house. Vaulted ceilings and sky-high windows create a chic look — but the real attraction is found outside, where two glass funiculars with heated tracks transport residents to the lake. Situated on 160 metres of lakefront, the estate also includes fire pits and a hot tub silhouetted by the brilliant blue water.

## $39 million car and motorcycle collection

Listed in January for US$250 ($A326) million, 924 Bel Air is a newly constructed 3,530-square-metre mansion with 12 bedrooms and 21 baths. The palatial playground features everything from an 25-metre infinity pool with a hydraulic television to a 40-seat James Bond-themed movie theatre. Downstairs, the US$30 ($A39) million auto gallery showcases nearly two dozen rare and vintage motorcycles and cars, including a Bugatti Veyron, Pagani Huayra, and Rolls-Royce Dawn.

## Observatory

Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks listed his nearly 7,000-acre West Creek Ranch for US$149 ($A194) million this summer. Straddling the border of Colorado and Utah, the remote retreat has it all: A 2,050-square-metre main house, more than 325-square-metre of covered outdoor entertaining spaces, and red-rock cliffs and canyons that stretch as far as the eye can see. An observatory with a rotating copper dome and Meade telescope points to the star-speckled heavens so residents can wish upon a star.
