The Singapore Bicentennial 2019 is a celebration marking 200 years since the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in the Lion City. To commemorate the event, the city is reflecting on its rich and diverse history through a raft of exciting events located in and around The Fullerton Heritage precinct.
The Fullerton Hotel itself is a part of the rich history of Singapore. Singapore’s 71st National Monument, the hotel once housed the General Post Office, The Singapore Club and the Chamber of Commerce. It stands as an ornate, functioning artefact emblematic of the luxurious past of the city, set against the Blade-runner inspiring high-rises and modern hotels along Marina Bay.
Some key bicentennial events within Fullerton precinct include Minimalism: Space. Light. Object – an extraordinary group of 130 works of art displayed in both the Art Science Museum and National Gallery of Singapore until April 14.
The Raffles in Southeast Asia Exhibition is another one of the key multimedia events in the Bicentennial program. Located at the Asian Civilisations Museum, the exhibition examines the complex life and times of modern Singapore’s founding father, Sir Stamford Raffles, until April 28.
The Bicentennial Experience at the Fort Canning centre is the centrepiece event of the Singapore Bicentennial presenting a multimedia, multi-sensory experience that takes visitors back in time – allowing them to experience key moments in the city’s transformation as far back as 1299. Open to September 15.
Running throughout the year is BALIKSG: Reflection of Singapore, an augmented reality experience that takes you on a journey along the Singapore River, revisiting significant events and meeting with historical figures. The exhibition immerses visitors through 360-degree augmented reality technology that is worked into the modern landscape of the Singapore River.
