How To Make The Perfect Margarita
World Tequila Day offers the ideal excuse to indulge in the archetypal refreshing cocktail.
No other spirit is as inextricably linked with celebration and revelry as tequila. And while options of the agave-based spirit have largely been informed by youthful overindulgence, tequila’s appeal spans far beyond hastily poured shots. While the versatile spirit lends itself to use in many a cocktail, a margarita remains an enduring classic.
Invented by American socialite Margarete ‘Margarita’ Sames in 1948, who wanted a refreshing drink to serve to her guests by the pool, the margarita became one of the first cocktails to use tequila. Having previously enjoyed the nuanced flavour of Cointreau, an orange liqueur produced in Saint-Barthélemy-d’Anjou, France, Sames decided to pair it with tequila and its classic accoutrements of salt and lime, adding a European sensibility to the traditionally Mexican flavours. Falling on the 24th of July, World Tequila Day offers the ideal opportunity to raise a (salt-rimmed) glass.
This World Tequila Day, we’re turning to Casamigos—the brainchild and ‘house tequila’ of George Clooney, Rande Gerber, and Mike Meldman—for inspiration. According to Casamigos brand ambassador Kate McGraw, Casamigos Blanco Tequila serves as the ideal base for the perfect margarita.
“The next thing is making sure you’re using freshly squeezed lime juice, which will give you that wonderful brightness that makes margaritas as delicious as they are,” she says. “I prefer to use agave syrup, but a great quality triple sec or orange liqueur is going to balance out the vibrancy of the lime juice.”
As for what to avoid? McGraw notes that many home bartenders tend to skimp on ice—at the cost of a flavourful marg. “Make sure you pack your cocktail shaker full of ice. This is going to ensure your drink comes out perfectly chilled and not overly watery every single time.”
