While the historic nameplate of A.Lange & Sohne stretches back to its 1845, the brand was only recently revived by the grandson of original founder F.A Lange – Walter Lange – in 1990.
To celebrate its rebirth, and 30 years of continuous production, the German manufacture has released two new variants of its Saxonia line, a new Saxonia Outsize Date – available in two colourways – and a very limited Saxonia Thin model.
Starting with the Outsize Date, the new timepiece arrives with a solid silver dial fitted to a 38.55mm case. Here, it is available in both 18-carat white and pink gold.
What separates the new editions from models past is the dial treatment with the surface rendered in a frosted grainy pattern while the subdial offers visual contrast with a tight azurage finish. Elsewhere gold alpha hands, bevelled baton indices coordinate with the large date window and Germanic dial text at the 12 o’clock, round out the offering.
The Saxonia Outsize Date is powered by the in-house L086.8 automatic movement decorated with a three-quarter striped bridge, that is accentuated with blued screw and an ornate skeletonised rotor in gold and platinum.
More visually striking is the svelte Saxonia Thin. The 40mm white gold case has been given a stunning dial treatment that A. Lange & Sohne is calling ‘black gold flux’. Here, a type of glass with copper is heated, in the process forming microscopically small crystal that is then cast on to the silver dial.
In keeping with the watch’s elegance, the slender hour and minute hands and applied baton-style markers arrive in white gold, while, true to its name, it sits only 6.2mm high on the wrist.
As for the movement, the watch uses the manually wound calibre L093.1, developed and crafted in-house which is the thinnest A. Lange & Söhne movement so far. Despite the compact size, it offers a power reserve of three days and is adorned with a Germanic three-quarter bridge in striped German silver.
All of the new timepieces use a hand-stitched alligator look leather strap with the Saxonia Thin arriving in patent leather.
The A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thin is limited to just 50 units and is priced at approx. $39,000 while the Outsize Date is priced at approx. $41,780.
