The winners from Swiss watchmaking's grandest awards
A Swiss watchmaker whose naval-inspired timepieces date back to the mid 1700s has been handed the top honour at the watchmaking industry’s most important celebration.
Ferdinand Berthoud collected the “Aiguille d’Or” at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve (GPHG), an award representing the highest honour in watchmaking, for its Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1 model.
Swiss watchmakers dominated the awards ceremony held in Geneva, which included a sentimental victory for the revered Girard-Perregaux manufacture.
Its La Esmeralda Tourbillon, distinctive for displaying the company’s trademark three flying bridges, was named the best tourbillon for 2016.
The timepiece is a tribute to the company’s famed pocket watch, which in 1889 was awarded a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
Girard-Perregaux was doubly recognised, with its bejewelled Cat’s Eye Tourbillon with Gold Bridge taking the award for the best ladies’ high-mech timepiece of 2016.
"It is an honor to be rewarded with two prizes distinguishing our know-how in Haute Horlogerie,” says Girard-Perregaux CEO Antonio Calce.
Fellow Swiss Piaget was also twice awarded, the stunning symmetry of the Limelight Gala Milanese Bracelet catching the judges’ eyes to take the overall Ladies Watch Prize, while its winner of the Artistic Crafts Prize features a Venetian fresco.
