The ultimate timepiece for classic car lovers

If you’re a classic car tragic at heart who likes to wear your heart on your sleeve (literally), you’re going to love this: a Danish company is making one-of-a-kind watches from salvaged iconic cars.

With the concept of “Recover, Recycle, Reclaim”, REC Watches aims “to hit a perfect blend of distinctive designs, subtle references, handmade components, and fantastic storytelling”.

Each watch has a backstory and comes complete with a scannable story card with an NFC chip and QR code, allowing you to access a video that details the exact history of the classic car your watch was made from.

“The objects which we recycle are carefully selected based upon both their condition, recyclability, and in particular their individual stories,” the company says.

“Odd as it may sound, that means we go to great lengths in order to find the ‘right wrecks’ to recycle.”

What makes it look like the classic car? It’s all in the design of the watch face.

For example, the 901-1 is designed from a classic Porsche 911. It features a power reserve disc that is created to resemble the fuel and oil gauge of the early 911s. The face and hands are inspired by the classic 911 dashboard and the seconds indices are written in the classic Porsche font.

The detail is phenomenal - the case-back is inspired by the Otto Fuchs rims of the classic 911s, with the rotor decorated to resemble the drilled brake discs. Elements of the design are inspired by steering wheel design and number plate cut-ins.

Currently they’re making watches from Porsche 911s, Ford Mustangs and Mini Coopers. But if none of those classic cars suits your style, you’re not done yet.

REC is asking for feedback for the subject of its next project - Willys Jeep, Alfa Romeo Duetto and BMW M3 E30 are all contenders, as well as the Triumph Bonneville motorcycle and the World War II-era Supermarine Spitfire fighter plane.
