Bowmore 1965: Our Recommended Festive Dram

Since 1965 – the year that the first US combat troops arrived in Vietnam, My Fair Lady won the Academy Award for Best Picture and The Beatles launched no less than five singles to the top of the charts – this delectable malt has been having its flavours coaxed out of it in the world’s oldest scotch maturation warehouse, which nestles on the weather-beaten coast of Bowmore’s Islay home

Now, with just 232 bottles of this exquisite single malt having become available, Bowmore 1965 looks set to become one of the most highly sought-after whiskies in the world this Christmas. Those who manage to acquire a bottle can expect complexity and sumptuous intensity, absorbed over time from the sherry oak casks, in spades. With a cask strength of 42 per cent abv, it offers bursts of fragrant fruits, sweet bees wax and intense dark chocolate, developing into burnt heather and a fresh spring flower finish. Best savoured neat – and most definitely forget about adding mixers – it balances out with a touch of jasmine, dried fruit and apricots.
