Five rugged yet refined jewellers for men

Modern-day men's accessories have expanded far beyond cufflinks and tie bars. These five designers are continuing to deepen their collections, experimenting with polished metals and organically-inspired motifs, melding masculine-looking designs with materials that are at once durable and stylish.

Hoorsenbuhs— named for a 16th-century Dutch trading ship piloted by designer Robert Keith's ancestors — is Los Angeles's go-to brand for robust yet elegant unisex jewellery. Keith, alongside design partner Kether Parker, crafts most pieces with the house's signature tri-link motif, which resembles a cross between a bridle bit and a classic chain link. Dubbed the Phantom Cuff, $US22,500 (about $A29,550), this 18-karat yellow gold bangle is a prime example of their unique aesthetic.

David Yurman

David Yurman will debut this Sextent Amulet pendant, $US350 (about $A460) —along with several other oceanic-inspired pieces — at the end of June as part of its expanded Maritime collection. The pendant, made with sterling silver and bronze, moves like a compass and would suit any stylish world traveller.

Yossi Harari

This bracelet from Yossi Harari's new Punta Galera collection (price upon request) resembles an artfully arranged chain of pebbles made from 24-karat gold and an oxidized combination of gold and silver — which Harari calls "gilver." The organic texture of these beads begs for the bracelet to be touched. Harari and his team of artisans craft each piece by hand in his Tel Aviv studio, drawing design inspiration from ornate Byzantine- and Etruscan-era jewellery.

Todd Reed

Todd Reed's latest creations build upon the Boulder, Colo., designer's signature rough-hewn look. A prime example, this wire-lined ring's, $US3575 (about $A4695) stacked layers of 18-karat yellow gold and sterling silver are a perfect mix of rugged and refined.

shamballa c INTEXT 5

Shamballa's Meucci rings (price upon request) are carved with the brand's star logo, which is meant to remind the wearer of humans' inherent connection to the cosmos. This version of the ring is crafted in dramatic black rhodium and 18-karat yellow gold. The effect is earthy, but with some stellar flash.
