Encompassing a 44-kilometre stretch of sand on California's iconic Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu is a treasure trove of craggy bluffs, secluded beaches, roadside fruit stands, and sweeping ocean vistas.

Long a popular day trip destination for those eager to escape the traffic-induced trauma of Los Angeles, the oceanfront oasis is an excellent choice for anyone looking to buy a beach home in a scenic, tight-knit community. The following properties showcase the very best of the 'Bu.

$76 Million Cape Cod–style home

Modelled after homes in Cape Cod, 33740 Pacific Coast Highway, currently on the market for $US57.5 million (about $A75.8 million), showcases the best of both coasts. Designed by architect Doug Burdge and formerly owned by _Friends_ producer Marta Kauffman, the gated, bluff-top residence provides private beach access to Billionaire's Bluff.

Situated at the edge of a 6960-square-metre lot, the two-story residence was designed to maximise ocean views from all angles.

Equipped with six bedrooms and 7.5 bathrooms, the Malibu manse shows off floor-to-ceiling windows, French doors, and oak plank floors. With an arched roof, fireplace, circular windows, and glass doors that lead to a wraparound patio overlooking the water, the master suite is reminiscent of a cosy cottage.

The stunning white master bathroom features a deep soaking tub with prime ocean views. Hostesses will be reluctant to leave the gourmet kitchen, which features a striking stone island and top-of-the-line appliances. Outfitted with a fireplace and built-in cabinets, the first-floor great room can accommodate a crowd. The home also includes a dining room, office, and elevator.

Though the home is gorgeous, the real star of the show is the limitless ocean located just outside. Accordingly, the backyard amenities highlight the brilliant blue ocean. An open-air pavilion includes a fireplace and an outdoor kitchen with a grill, pizza oven, and bars.

$30 Million ultra-modern home

Situated on 4047-square-metres of oceanfront property dotted with palm trees and exotic foliage, the MariSol Modern home is a seven-bedroom, 11-bathroom beachside masterpiece. Built in 2015, the home is located in the exclusive MariSol Malibu community, a 17-home neighbourhood located on an oceanfront bluff.

A stone walkway leads to the compound-style home that is bedecked with floor-to-ceiling walls of glass and slate-grey stone accents. The ultramodern chef's kitchen — with a centre island and breakfast nook — funnels outdoors to a covered dining area and barbecue station.

The master suite (accessible by elevator) features his and her closets and a spacious patio overlooking the ocean. But perhaps the most enviable space in the house is the master bedroom, equipped with a glass-walled, walk-in shower with stunning oceanfront views. Elsewhere, a cosy theatre lined with comfy couches and plush ottomans is sure to become a family-favourite retreat.

Los Angeles–born clothing and furniture designer James Perse has listed his personally remodelled Malibu farmhouse for nearly $US13 million (about $A17.13 million). Resting on almost 8093-square-metres, the roughly 688-square-metre estate features an exquisite pool approximately 15 metre in length, a two-car garage with motor court, and keys to fenced-off Little Dume Beach.

After buying the house in 2013 as an investment, James redesigned and renovated the property to capture the rustic and laid-back feel of Point Dume — a peninsula on Malibu's coastline with a bluff-top nature preserve and a quiet community of large estates overlooking the Pacific.

As a designer who values simplified upscale living, it is only fitting that James decorated this home with minimalist yet sophisticated furnishings. The house combines antiques and modern pieces from his eponymous brand alongside a custom shuffleboard and several decorative surfboards that complete the relaxed beach feel.

Though the furniture is not included in the sale price, items can be purchased individually or together for a price ranging from $US750,000 to $US1 million (about $A988,300 to $A1.32 million). (

$15 million Broad Beach home

Nestled between multilevel houses on a wide stretch of sand on Broad Beach in Malibu, the residence at 31454 Broad Beach Road overlooks the shimmering azure waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Inside, all-white interiors and white hardwood floors contrast with the strikingly blue ocean outside. Spread across the 700-square-metres beachfront property, the residence's seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms mean there is plenty of room to accommodate family and friends.

The open-concept living/dining area features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean. The adjacent, newly remodelled kitchen features a breakfast nook and an elongated marble-top island. Sliding glass doors open to an outdoor patio equipped with a glass table and chairs, as well as comfortable couches and lounge chairs.

Skylight windows provide natural illumination for the palatial master suite, which pampers owners with a fireplace, a sitting area that opens onto a patio, and a master bathroom with a vanity, a deep soaking tub, and marble backsplashes.

Oenophiles will appreciate the 3000-bottle wine cellar, a temperature-controlled space with rock walls and exotic-wood racks. A separate tasting room is equipped with custom-made wine-barrel flooring and a Hobart wine-glass washer.

After pouring a glass of wine, residents can retreat to the 12-chair home theatre to watch a movie of their choice. Outside, a secluded swimming pool and hot tub offer additional options for repose. $55 million La Villa Contenta estate

Set on 2.55 oceanfront hectares, the 1500-square-metre estate La Villa Contenta is lavish even by local standards. Built in 2002, the stately family home of developer Richard Weintraub has a timeless presence — from its Kentia-palm forest and landscaped gardens to the antique-marble _pietra dura_ mosaic in the entryway.

Although quite regal — with significant architectural details in every room — the four-bedroom, 1115-square-metre main house still feels like a home. Rare antiques furnish the double living room panelled in pale maple.

The dining room comfortably seats 24 beneath twin chandeliers and a French limestone ceiling. An elevator ride to the lower level reveals a billiard room, a climate-controlled wine cellar for several thousand bottles, a screening room, and a gym.

Among its several outbuildings, which include a six-bedroom guesthouse and staff quarters, the pool house is the estate's claim to fame, having posed as the New Orleans mansion of Queen Sophie-Anne in the HBO series _True Blood_.

Approximately 1 million seashells adorn the doorways, chandeliers, and sculptures under its 6 metre glass ceilings. Swimmers change in rooms panelled in onyx before jumping into the Murano-glass-tiled lap pool. Just outside the building, a second swimming pool showcases Pacific Ocean views.
