Carbon Dating: A Mountain Romp With Lexus’ Hot RC F Track Edition
Lexus celebrated its 30th anniversary in Australia with an exclusive, closed-road driving event last week at Victoria’s Lake Mountain Resort. The luxury Japanese brand, whose 1989 debut model the LS400 set a new mass-market automotive benchmark for quality, quietness and customer service, currently boasts its most comprehensive model line-up ever.
The Lake Mountain drive also showcased the latest addition to Lexus’ F Line performance sub-brand. The newly revised Lexus RC F ($134,129) and RC F Track Edition ($165,690) coupes, powered by a 351kW, 5.0-litre V8, have received stronger and lighter suspension components and retuned aerodynamics.
The latter is most evident on the RC F Track Edition, which sheds 65kg in kerb weight through the adoption of carbon-fibre panels for its bonnet, roof, boot and aerodynamic package, which includes a more overt rear wing and diffuser. Both RC F coupe versions also gain a standard launch control system, adopted from Lexus’ fabled LFA supercar of 2011.
The RC F coupes expand Lexus’ F Line performance-styled family, which also includes the IS F, GS F and (limousine) LS F sedans, and complement the stunning, avant garde-styled LC grand touring coupe.
A select group of media was helicoptered into the Lake Mountain Resort, there to drive in the RC F and RC F Track Edition models on a closed mountain road. They were then treated to “hot laps” in the passenger seat with a trio of pro drivers, in high-performance models including the brand’s 2011 flagship LFA.
A supercar legend in its own right, just 500 examples of the LFA were ever built, and examples today change hands for up to $1.5 million.
