A. Lange & Söhne is extending its 1815 model family with a sophisticated timepiece — the new 1815 Rattrapante — featuring a chronograph rattrapante for which the German manufacture has custom-developed the calibre fitted within a platinum case.
With this masterful newcomer, A. Lange & Sohne’s watchmakers yet again showcase their expertise in short-time measurement. Since the relaunch of Lange, the manufacture has crafted the world’s first double rattrapante chronograph and the triple split, adding a third, separately stoppable hand pair in 2018.
Here, within the 1815 Rattrapante, the mechanism expands the functionality of a classic chronograph by allowing the measurement of a random number of lap times within a minute. The watch, therefore, is fitted with two superposed chronograph hands, the centre chronograph hand and rattrapante hand respectively.
When the pusher at 2 o’clock is actuated, the centre rattrapante hand can now be stopped independency of the chronograph hand and then resynchronised with it.
The 1815 Rattrapante comes in a noble platinum case at 41.2mm that contains a bright argente-coloured dial and dark-blued hands for contrast and legibility. The traditional style elements of the watch see a peripheral railway-track minute scale and prominent Arabic numerals.
Back to that movement — which is visible through the sapphire crystal caseback — the in-house development has allowed the watchmakers at A. Lange & Söhne to choose the position of the subsidiary dials, with the team here opting for the 12 and 6 o’clock. The timepiece’s L101.2 movement sees the control of elapsed and lap-time measurements handled in the classic manner of two-column wheels. When fully wound, the mainspring barrel offers a power reserve of 58 hours.
Then there’s the finnisage of the timepiece. All upper sides of the moving parts of the rattrapante chronograph, such as levers, springs and jumpers, are decorated with straight graining while the peripheral chamfers are polished.
The watch is attached to the wrist via an alligator leather strap and — given its horological intricacy — is limited to a global 200-piece edition. POA; alange-soehne.com
