While Australians are only recently enjoying newfound freedoms, the SailGP has been racing around the world.
The globe-trotting sporting tournament has seen events in Bermuda, Italy, Great Britain, Denmark, St. Tropez and the first-ever Spain Sail Grand Prix.
Now, in one of the first major international sporting tournaments to return to Sydney since the onset of the pandemic, the SailGP comes to Sydney Harbour across two days of action on 17-18 of December as the world’s fastest sailboats duel for the SailGP title and a cool $1 million.
Team Australia currently sit top of the table heading into the Sydney event by one point, which only precedes the final event in San Francisco, and former Olympic gold medallist and team driver Tom Slingsby is determined to taste victory on home turf, ehm, water after being bested by team Great Britain last time out.
“It’s been another difficult year for Australians and for the people of Sydney, which is why we are so excited to give them an awesome event to look forward to as SailGP returns this December,” says Slingsby. “It’s been great racing in Bermuda and Europe in recent months, but the Aussie team have had these dates circled in the calendar for a long time and we can’t wait to hear the home crowd support us on Shark Island and along the harbour,” he added.
Fans can witness the action of the foiling F50 catamarans — capable of speeds of nearly 100km/h — within the natural amphitheatre of Sydney Harbour.
A number of experience packages are available with the option to watch from Shark Island (from $189) or cheer from the top deck of a spectator boat on the harbour (from $117) as Australia takes on Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand Spain and the USA.
Exclusive tours will also be available to go behind the scenes at the SailGP’s team technical bases at White Bay (from $27) while Sydney yachties can bring their own boat to the harbour and watch the SailGP from their own vessel.
Away from the racing, the sparkling waterfront precinct of Barangaroo will host the SailGP Village. Open to the public, it will offer exciting programming for fans in the heart of the city.
