There’s a case to be made that Jacob & Co.’s latest is the pinnacle of its Astronomia Tourbillon offering, and with a narrative behind each, this newcomer boasts the tallest tale of them all.
Jacob & Co. in collaboration with Swedish explorer and environmentalist Johan Ernst Nilson has created a limited edition watch, the Astronomia Mount Everest. The extraordinary timepiece arrives with a chunk of the legendary mountain inside and is further complemented by the fact the watch is sold with a helicopter experience that takes the buyer onto Mt. Everest with Nilson himself.
Nilson is an accomplished alpinist and explorer, having climbed the Seven Summits as well as completing the Three Poles Challenge. Familiar with the timepiece, Nilson took an Astronomia Tourbillon with him through the Himalayas, reaching 6200-metres and minus 30-degree temperatures where the timepiece continued to work.
The new edition, that Nilson hopes will bring greater awareness to environmental challenges, is based on the brand’s Astronomia Sky Tourbillon and features the double-axis gravitational tourbillon on one of four satellites. The other three satellites host a one-carat Jacob cut diamond alongside a constantly rotating magnesium globe and the hour-minute dial with the words ‘Everest’, ‘North’ and ‘South’ are all indicated (pointing to the three poles).
It also marks the first time Jacob & Co. has used Super-LumiNova for the hands, while the luminescent material is also featured on the rubber strap.
Two editions of the 47mm are available – one with a black dial made from blackened 18-carat white gold, and another with a blue dial in 18-carat white gold. Only 12 of each will be made taking the total to 24.
Importantly, the approx. $1.25 million watch has a charitable component with 10 per cent of the proceeds going to organisations dedicated to helping the natural environment.
