Rife with new Italo-inspired dining, if you forked the air in Sydney’s CBD right now you wouldn’t be surprised find tortellini on the other end of it.
Adding itself to the proverbial pasta sauce is Toppi Martin Place, which opened its doors on November 21. The new space is named after Bar M matriarch, Paola Toppi, the driving force behind dining institution Bar M who is making her foray into the CBD.
Designed by Steel + Stitch, the 30-metre space boasts rich sandstone, steel and beige accents. Broken into different spaces that hold up to 300 people. Pull up a stool at the Cocktail Bar, grab a quick bite at the Pasta Bar or indulge in the Dining Room.
Bar M has long been a vocal supporter of late-night dining and continues its support throughout the Toppi Martin Place. At the bar, the wine list, by Matteo Belkeziz, takes on a range of Italian, local and international wines, displayed as you enter the venue, while the cocktail list is an unfussy one built on the foundation of Italian classics, some with embellishments like the Tiramisu Martini.
To dine there are two options, the Pasta Bar, with dishes like the duck ravioli with sage, browned butter and duck jus and taglioni with lemon, butter and blue swimmer crab. For something a touch formal, the Dining Room provides mains championing the protein. Think ‘Wagyu Eye Fillet Alla Pizzaiola’ and ‘Spatchcock Alla Cacciatora’ amongst an array of Bar M-esque pastas.
“We want to help bring a new lease of life and modernised culinary experience back to the CBD and create a destination for Sydneysiders any night of the week”, says Toppi. “We’re really proud to return to the CBD and take residency in Sixty Martin Place”.
Despite the saturation of Italian restaurants opening in Sydney’s CBD and surrounds, with Paola Toppi’s credentials behind this venture, Sydney can stomach another mouthful of maccheroni.
