Since 2012, the Bulgari Art Award, in collaboration with the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), has been a strong and important presence in elevating Australia’s artistic industry with an annual accolade that does more than simply deliver much-needed dollars.
And this year, the recipient of the $80,000 prize – comprising a $50,000 gallery exhibition and $30,000 Italian residency – is Melbourne-based artist Nusra Latif Qureshi, marking the first time the Bulgari Award has been given for a body of work, as opposed to a single piece.
“Six exquisite paintings by Nusra will enter the Gallery’s collection, spanning the period that she has lived and worked in Australia. These are the first works by Nusra to enter the Gallery’s collection and we are thrilled to represent the breadth of her practice through the Bulgari Art Award,” says Dr Michael Brand, Art Gallery of NSW Director.

Qureshi was born in 1973, Lahore, Pakistan, before moving to Melbourne in 2001. Training at the National College of Arts in Lahore Pakistan, she learnt the painting style of Mughal courts brought from Persia in the 16th century – her engrossing pieces combining the traditional techniques of South Asian miniature painting with layers of historical, contemporary and autobiographical elements.
“I would like to thank Bulgari for the award that not only allows my work to be part of the AGNSW collection but also provides an incredible opportunity to visit Italy. As my practice draws heavily on art historical references, I am looking forward to studying significant artworks in Italian museums,” says Qureshi.
This year Bulgari and the AGNSW offering the public a chance to view all Bulgari Art Award winners as a collective.
“We are thrilled to celebrate another year of the Bulgari Art Award in partnership with the Art Gallery of NSW, an award which strengthens the on-going support Bulgari has for the art and culture industries, both globally and locally in Australia,” says Brad Harvey Managing director of Bulgari Australia.
