A lot of horological rhetoric is built on aviation.
And today we flew into the action – with a hands-on, first look (and feel) of Breitling’s latest homage to aeronautics with its new Avenger collection.
The modernised collection – initially launched in 2001 – speaks a specific design language that lends itself to the Avenger’s inherently aero-sport aesthetic. With 14 new references now offered in three sizes – 43mm, 45mm and 48mm – across a range of functions, Breitling collectors and new generation watch enthusiasts alike can choose a decent piece.
Within the collection, the 48mm Super Avenger Chronograph and Chronograph 48 Night Mission make the, ahem, biggest statement. The Super Avenger presents in a stainless-steel case with luminous-coated hands and numerals while the Night Mission variant offers the same dial layout in a lightweight titanium case.
Avenger Chronograph 45 Night Mission
A fraction smaller on the wrist, the Avenger 45 models sees two chronographs and two dive focussed pieces from the Sea Wolf join the fold. The Chronograph 45 has a steel case with a unidirectional rotating bezel in either a blue or black dial, while the Sea Wolf variant comes in a striking yellow – to stand out from the pack.Fancy being a little more subtle? Then the Avenger Chronograph 43 and Automatic 43 add versatility to the collection. The clean and discrete dial of the Avenger Automatic 43 in stainless-steel is as sturdy an all-rounder as you’ll find, making use of the sporty features of the collection without obvious boastfulness of the others.
Avenger Seawolf 45
To launch the new collection Breitling has brought together its Aviation Pioneers Squad – made up of three individuals who represent airborne disciplines, but who, like modernised watches, also represent the new age of air adventure. Amongst them, Scott Kelly – who spent an astonishing 520 days in space; Rocio González Torres – the first woman to log 1000 hours at the helm of an F-18 fighter jet and Luke Bannister – a world champion drone pilot.
The Avenger Collection is available now and starts at $4890.
