The MAAS (Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences) Centre for Fashion, in partnership with luxury fashion retailers Net-A-Porter and Mr Porter, will kick off its inaugural MAAS Ball on February 1.
Being held at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum, the ball aims to raise money for the Centre for Fashion initiative which secures acquisitions of Australian fashion to strengthen the Museum’s collection for future generations.
The ball is a prelude to the two MAAS fashion exhibitions for 2018 – Reigning Men: Fashion in Menswear 1715 – 2017; and Akira Unsaid.
The night is set to be one to be remembered thanks to creative direction by Tony Assness, known for his work with Bazmark, Fairfax & Roberts and Sydney Dance Company.
Celebrity arrivals (it’s said there will be local and international VIPs, designers, models and government officials in attendance) will be photographed on the 12-metre hot pink wall that has been designed in collaboration with artist Johnathon Zawada.
Guests can sip a glass of Moet bubbles or a signature Grey Goose cocktail while perusing the exclusive exhibit of iconic fashion pieces from MAAS archives selected by MAAS head curators for one night only.
All this will be by the light of the moon. Well, a giant installation of the global ‘Museum of the Moon’ scale model moon (seven metres in diameter) which will be the moon’s the first appearance in the southern hemisphere.
A three-course meal designed by Merivale’s John Wilson and Fred’s head chef Danielle Alvarez will be enjoyed, along with wine pairings by Bird in Hand.
According to MAAS Director and CEO Dolla Merrillees: “The MAAS Ball brings together the Australian industry to celebrate the ingenuity, vibrancy and legacy of the sector.”
